So we're up to 6 piece balls now?

Really don't see the benefit for many average golfers (myself included) and I can't justify £4 per ball

I guess it's aimed at those who can afford it. I mean if you can buy a Bugatti you're not going to get worried about the 15mpg.

But at least you're getting a nice car out of it. Don't really see what you get from a 6-piece ball.

Oh wait, just read it again and they're 'designed to emit higher energy levels'. My bad. :p

 that must mean straighter and longer right!

I've only started using 'better' balls in the past 6 months or so - I wasn't able to notice the difference before that in all honesty, but when consistency of strike improved this changed.... however, I still won't use my 'better' balls on the first tee (pond in the landing zone, OOB right, red markers left) or on holes where there is a real chance of losing the ball. Some people will say that's negative thinking, but in reality, for me, losing a £2.50 on the first would really peeve me off. Of course, I do lose the £2.50 ball but it's more like 1 a round or every 2 rounds; Losing a £4 ball - my PPs round on Saturday would have cost him £52! Thankfully he switched to bright orange slazengers.

I just can't see the appeal of this or what the benefit would be. Maybe a CAT 1 golfer would see a benefit, but not at my level (mediocre mid-handicap). But I was wrong before, and have changed my mind on ball quality and equipment as to the difference it can make. But only at a certain point. And at this point, I don't need 6 layers, still, wouldn't mind finding one or two on the course, just to see.....

I won a dozen srixon z stars at the weekend, anyone know how I tell if the spin-skin (tm) is 3rd or 4th generation?

What you say isn’t too far from the truth.
All better players want is consistency from a ball. How it performs is personal preference, as long as it does the same thing everytime.
Piece of advise, find a ball and stick with it. Don’t keep changing balls.
I’ve played the TP5X for the last 3 years without changing balls once, even through winter.

That's really impressive. I was delighted to get round Tandridge with the same ball I started the round - and even more delighted to play another 18 holes with it later in the week! Don't expect it to last much longer....😭

Every different model of the same ball has to have different markings to enable it to be identified by a starter for the conforming balls list. With a lot of manufactures it is about how many dots, lines, arrows and the spacing between then. It is an absolute nightmare to know for example which ProV1 is which model with the number of times Titleist has brought out a new version (probably around 10 now).

The boxes also change and often you will see the ident markings on the box, although I note Titleist has stopped doing this.

Just go to the Srixon website to see if you have latest version.

I think there's probably more benefit in using the same ball for the whole round rather than chopping and changing, even if that means losing the odd one. I would only ever use balls at a price point that I wouldn't mind losing one too much! And to be fair I only lose one ball every 3-5 rounds these days. But I use Velocity's which are £23 a box at the mo, so just under £2 a ball.

Great advice, except for the through winter for me, our greens slow up and I need a ball that runs a bit further from the same strike.

I have played Bridgestone B330 RXS for the past few years and bought in bulk after settling on them. Just down to my last two so the hunt for a new ball starts. The new Version just does not feel the same so they have been rejected.

I have a mate who swears by ProV1s because he says they never wear out. I always remark back to him that he does not hit the ball hard enough.

If I get any premium ball to last more than 2 rounds I am doing well as it is obvious that is it is a used ball from the amount of scuffs on it from the wedges.

Pro V1 and AVX are 3 piece, Pro V1x are 4 piece I believe; why would you pay £14 per layer for Pro V1 or £10.50 per layer for Pro V1x when you can have the Honma for £8 per layer. Far better value 👍
I disagree. Only 326 dimples, that is shocking VFM in my opinion.
