So then, Gareth Bale

I think he is a great player and good luck to the lad. Buy I find the size of the fee (and his salary) outrageous and frankly pretty obscene given Real Madrid are notionally public owned and we the European taxpayer are bailing Spain out of their financial omnishambles. Handy they can use their public ownership to 'avoid' FFP issues and yet choose to ignore it when broader concerns intrude.

What puzzles me is why has he left the best league in the world?

I mean the standard of the games so far, especially the ones involving the biggest clubs, surely would have persuaded him to stay around.

For the record he's a cracking footballer but it's a deal that is good for all involved......especially his agent!

The Spanish government/local council keep baleing (gedit) them out. They sold their old training ground to the council the other year, who overpaid a massive amount.

Also in Spain, each club negotiate their own TV deals so Barca and Real earn tonnes more than say Valencia. Even UEFA have said that this is wrong, although haven't enforced anything, so basically FFP wont apply to them two clubs.

Whereas Man U may get twice the amont of what Cardiff get from Sky, Barca may get 15 times what Getafe get, if I understand correctly.

I believe their income tax/VAT may be going up a very large amount, so they reckon more good players from Spain may come here, as not the same tax breaks as yesteryear, but I doubt the real stars will come, unless for footy reasons, or maybe Chelsea/City can only afford them.

Spot on LB on all counts....

Council bout their old training ground at about 4x market value (where the Puerta Europa is now if you know Madrid) and gifted them a new training complex on the edge of the city.

There's no collective TV rights so Madrid and Barca get exponentially more than mid tier clubs in La Liga.

The "Beckham tax" break has ended... When goldenballs signed for Madrid a tax break was put in place for footballers earning over £crazy which reduced their tax rate to approx 20% I think. That has now stopped so players are more amenable to moving to England.

Bale? Crazy money but they'll make it back in merchandise and tv rights/sponsorship so I agree with Dodger it's probably a good deal all round

It's quite wrong that they can negotiate their own TV deal.

LFC's chairman mooted this the other year, and the vast majority of LFC fans didn't back him. The TV money should be spread more fairly, as it is now. Spain should come in line, under UEFA pressure IMHO.

Not a Spuds fan by any means, but Bale is a pretty decent player. I think he'll be a good player for Real, but he's gonna have to perform fantastically well to justify the price tag. Bale at 66 Million or Ozil at 42...... I think Arsenal got a much better deal than Real.

Agree - more so as Bale was I think £85m (€100m). My lad - Arsenal fan - is jumping up and down with Ozil having signed.
