well after playing decent recently and thinking I was improving, today was the monthly medal and I was pants!!

It seriously felt like I have never played golf before, crap off the tee, approaches were miles off and even my short game (which is my strength) was all over the place

3 OOB's, 5 x 3 putts it was bloody horrible.

Once my head had gone that was it, I ended up just going through the motions as even if I tried to settle, concentrate and regain some composure I was just unable to put a decent shot together.

Them golfing gods are gonna get a kick in the balls if they do it again to me I tell ya. I am now in that state of stupid game, should just give it up.. but no, this glutton for punishment is going to spend a couple of evenings down the range and work on what my pro has taught me, also getting rid of the belly putter for a proper one. Lesson Learned and more practice & effort required

On a side note the weather was gorgeous and the company was good and it beats work or moaning kids :)

rant/moan over

i know the feeling buddy, went round yesterday for our last qualifier felt really good on the range, everything going where i wanted it.. First tee shot, straight down the middle of the fairway... Then I shanked my second into the trees and that was it... my score went 7/7/8/3/9/8/4/7.... +22 after 9 holes...

Went on a the Bedfordshire GC par 3 today with misses brother and 6 year old son, everything was perfect, putting for birdie 90% of the time.

It happens, we just need to suck it up - i'd rather have an awful finish than NR.

I've got 3 lessons to use up, so im thinking of doing a 9 hole play with the pro and some putting I think.

scoring very similar actually, I had a par 3 at the 3rd and another par 3 at the 12th, I was going to not hand the card in but hey, I have been threatening sub 90 last few weeks and this was just a reminder I still need to practice a lot more.

scored 52 front 9 and 61 back 9 for a absolutely marvellous 113! My worst score since my 1st ever round back in March

stupid bloody game ;)

Same here G1bbo, yesterday got off to a slow start with 3 dings along the way, ended with 33 points, the holes where I scored, I hit the ball well, the three no scores were pathetic. Today was worse, I ended up picking up on each of the last 4 holes as my score was done (non qualifying club winter society game so no penalties). I actually should have walked off after 9 as the ground was more than wet, balls were going missing just off the fairway, greens were slow and I was losing patience.

Same here too!!!! I effectively gave up after 12 and just continued to shoot the breeze with my mates and have a laugh. Non counting here for a while as they are working on three fairways so at least it doesn't mean .1 back

I have never walked off other than when injured. A bad round in good company is infinitely better than work and there is the chance to play a few good shots as the game goes on - you cant get better sitting in the clubhouse

Chris

what is wierd is it was flat calm and very nice yet I seem to play best when theres a good breeze. sort of glad I wasnt the only one but it really does leave a sour taste grrrrrr

I would never walk of Chris, as you say its the company and theres always a chance of playing one absolutely blinding hole/shot/putt just to remind you that you can actually do it now and again :D

G1bbo, fear not. In the last 3 weeks I have shot a PB twice, once off the yellows and then yeaterday in a competition. The end of the season has come to early for me.

Despite some awful putting today I managed 38 points from a reduced handicap of 19, which is 9 below my official club handicap. If I can have a good round then anybody can, Surely you remember how bad I was at Beau Desert earlier this year, no lessons, just plenty of golf and concentration.

Just lately I have been arriving at the course around 40 minutes early, shoes on and a steady walk upto the first tee, 10 minutes on the putting green where I don't even try to put the ball in the hole, just use the time to get the feel of the putter. Have a swig of pop and a smoke get on the first tee and knob it/blast it down the fairway*

* delete as appropiate.

Very true.

I had an absolute shocker on the front 9 on Saturday, worst I can remember playing and really not like me as I'm generally pretty consistent.

Was still enjoying it though, in a group of good lads and sun was shining so just glad to be out there playing, put up with enough rubbish at work and home!

Glad I didn't go off after 9 as picked things up on the back 9.

dont let it get to you, i had a shocker last week in the medal. Hit an 11 on the 2nd hole and that was enough for me, ended up on 116. LOL

That has to be my worst score ever, normally play to my handicap or just below it.

Played yesterday and shot a 87 (par 71) so 4 under my H/C and had 41pts, and all was well with the world.

Today played like a prat, shot a 99 and that was with a 30yd chip in, hit the flag and dropped in, thankfully as it looked liked I was going to be O/B for the 3rd time on that hole !!!

Got another 2 lessons this week, should be fun !!!!

I walked off in a roll up a short while back and it was the first time I'd done it. Don't regret it as I wasn't enjoying it and was probably not helping my partners have a good time too. Didn't see the point in prlonging the agony and there were only five holes left so it was hardly going to get any better.

I hate days where you warm up well and then get onto the course and you can't hit a single shot. Its so frustrating. Even if you are having a bad round there are usually one or two good holes in there to give you hope but normally the worse you play, the harder you try and the worse it gets and so it goes on. You just have to accept that some days it isn't going to happen. It isn't a reflection on the work you've put in and sometimes practicing harder isn't the way to go. Trust the man who knows on that one!

Never walked off. Have hobbled off when my back went, but kept playing until the point I could not get the club to reach the ball.:)

thanks Homer, I know you speak from experience ;)

Already put it down as one of them days as most of us do I am sure. As for practising harder, not neccessarily harder per se, I really need to just practice a little more and also more constructively with what my pro has given me to work on. Having had a lot better rounds lately it has made me complacent and stop working on any of the drills and thus I fear resorting to my old bad habits.

onwards and upwards as they say :)

It will all come good mate, at least you know you can get that decent score. Those golfing gods have it in for us all....

Remember medal is also a true barometer of where the game is. As you say it might be a case on working smarter with the drills you have but at the end of the day (it gets dark:D;)) it is just one bad round. You haven't sunk to a Homeresque dip in form when the walls are closing in, the clouds are pitch black and all hope is lost - AGAIN

I did actually walk off the course today..... But not because of bad play.

Got stuck behind 3, four balls playing winter league (2 groups in front waiting on tees) so I decided a trip to the short game practice area would better serve my time.
