As you can see from my signature, I have some decent kit except for the irons which are from the original start set I bought just short of two years ago.

Santa Claus has been in touch and has offered to buy me a new set this year and I want to get something that will last a good few years.

Most of my kit has come from AG, but as mentioned before, they push you to buy what they make the most money on. I'm not a member anywhere so don't have a pro to go to.

I like the though of the Belfrey as they have the facility to offer a range of clubs.

Belfrey is just short of 2 hours away so the question (now I've finally got to it :p ) is what are your experiences of the Belfrey if you've been and is there anywhere that offers a similar fitting experience closer to Yorkshire?

Also, is one trip likely to be enough or would it need a couple of fittings before plumping for a set?

Spoff,
Just because you're not a member of a club, doesn't stop you from using a nearby proshop.
In fact I'm sure any pro would welcome you into his shop and will glady offer you advice on what clubs to buy.
First question would be what's your budget?
Then handicap
Then any preference on manufacturer
and so on
But have a drive round a few and see what they all say
Most importantly, try and and hit them on a range somewhere so you can see the ball fly.
Do you have a preference? Ping, Titleist, Mizuno etc?

Cheers Bob.

budget is a little unknown as it depends if parents and friends are happy to offer a cash alternative to a Xmas present.

I imagine though I could be looking up to around £500.

Handicap is 28 (lowest score for 18 is 102. Usually scoring around 110 at the minute)

Rest of my kit is all TaylorMade, I'd *like* to keep all the same but wouldn't go TM if I hit something else better.

I agree with Bob. Most pros will offer an unbiased opinion and will be able to look at your swing and give your sound advice on the crucial aspects such as steel v graphite and regular or firm flexed shafts.

Many are aware of the power of the internet and so will try where possible to match prices. Even if they can't you have to account for the personal one to one advice your getting and the value of an opinion based on what the pro has seen. I'm sure there are several decent pros in your area so why not take a trip around a few this weekend (if you phone ahead to make sure he isn't teaching away - otherwise you may get an assistant less able to help)

I'm fortunate that being in Leeds there are plenty of respectable courses around.

The only reason I had not considered goign to any of them is that the places I have played always appeared to specialise in one or two brands.

That is why I was thinking Belfrey as they offer most I beleive.

I'll certainly try the local clubs first over the next few weeks and see what's what.

quick search has thrown up Ilkley GC, Baildon and Mid Yorkshire as all offering club fitting, and even more local Scarcroft.

there is also Designer Golf Northern Way at Bellingham north west of Newcastle.

5th Sept TM tour van is at AG in Leeds

no idea where these are in relation to you.

If you have TM already why not check out the demo day. You'll get a trackman monitor session so you'll have all the swing spees, spin rates to hand and they normally offer pretty good deals if you order on the day.

Ive been considering taking my daughter to the Belfrey for a fitting, shes after the Nike Victory Irons, I can get these from both clubs shes a member at, but their fitting is abit basic, no cameras, trackmans, just abit of tape on the bottom & thats your lot, am I being blinded by the Belfrey style technology & does the basic club fitting do the same.

I wouldn't bother with the Belfy, and I live within an hour.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's great and whatever, but I'd either go to my range/pro shop/national centre in the hope of getting a better deal and supporting local business.

I got my irons from somewhere about 30 minutes away (a Mizuno certified place) and have never looked back.

I do think the Belfry attracts a lot of its customers based on the name and many local pros would offer a comprehensive fittinger service. Please avoid American Golf etc as the majority of their sales staff, despite the corporate patter, simply do not know how to correctly custom fit. I was once told that I needed a club that was 4 degrees upright despite being only 6 foot and with a round swing plane that would actually require a much flatter angle. When I asked avout spin rates etc formthe monitor in the bay all I got was "it went stright and carried xx yards". I could see that myself!!!!

I guess one way to make the process easier is to try as many makes and models as you can and try and narrow the options (make and model) and then look for the local pros selling that manufacturers products
