Given the extreme driving conditions that we have experienced lately should Britain change its laws and allow the use of snow chains in this weather?

They work well on the continent etc.

Thoughts?

And they're not that expensive :)

I think you'll find they are illegal in this country grumpy jock!

Very few cars are capable of having snow chains fitted because of the lack of clearance between the tyre and wheel arch. Also I don't think they are suitable for front wheel drive. :(

Winter tyres are the way.

I have a set for the front wheels of the car, they are mounted on a couple of steel-rims as opposed to the alloys and work a treat.

Just in the process of doing the same, two cheap wheels abd two snow tyres, leave them in the garage and the week before snow is due wack them on. No good the eye bug the area we are in is a nightmare for bit being gritted. My car stayed in the work yard all week when webbed the snow as it wouldn't have got home with the abandoned cars scattered everywhere. Lucky I only work 1/2 mild from home done went in on foot wed/thur/fri and Saturday morning.

As others have stated though 1 week of snow and all the potholes are back
