As to not hijack the other thread....

My contract is nearly up and I've been decided for a while now that I'm done with smartphones, it's time to go old school.

I'm absolutely sick to death of seeing groups of people around the dinner table (at home or restaurants) all head down and playing on their phones. I'm sick of people taking selfies. I'm sick of people with selfie sticks. I'm sick of what someone has posted on facebook/twitter/instagram being so important that they need to tell everyone in close vicinity about how amazing it is. I'm sick of how "likes" are important. I'm sick of people walking along the street bumping into others/street furniture because what is on their phone is so unbelievably important.

So that's it, I'm done. Come contract renewal time I'm going PAYG and going to get a phone that calls and sends texts.....I may go extreme and get one that has an FM radio inbuilt though. Crazy.

I'm 34 if anyone cares.

You do realise that everyone else will still do all the things you mention, regardless of what phone you have?

Totally agree with the OP. I got my phone from Asda. Makes and receives calls and texts. And that's it. It's got a camera that I've never used. Cost me £15. Top it up about £40 per year.

The rant is all good but its one of them.... live and let live... Protest if you like but its going to keep moving forwards. I would hope that parents are teaching there young ones how to behave at the table and so on.

Adults did not grow up with it though... it came along... Lets hope that behavior adapts.

Trouble is you never know if someone is calling a cab or what...

I understand where the OP is coming from but sadly the world has moved on and even if he reverts to an old style phone it won't stop everyone else looking down and tapping away. I wanted to get my dear old mum a simple phone, large screen to simply use as a phone. She didn't even't want to text. Carphone Warehouse looked at me as though I was mad and couldn't supply anything.

I feel your pain Homer, I'm considering trying to go proper old school.... Nokia 3210 or something from eBay.

I totally get that my actions won't stop anyone else doing it, nor am I against the benefits of smartphone usage..... its just the antisocial (which is ironic) behavior that they cause and the importance that they have in people's lives that has made me wanto change my own ways.

I would agree with you, all the way, except I'm replying to this thread on my phone, so I'm as bad as everyone else.

You could go really old school, and not have a mobile at all.

Like richart.

I wish I had a £1 for every time someone said where's your phone. Mine is quite often either at home or switched off. I lived donkey's years without the urgent need and see little point in it running my life now.

Gets me when everyone is on "social media" but no one is really socialising.
People on Facebook telling the world what they had for dinner, checking in at the gym or just moaning about life in general.
Bit like the forum at times, :)

Its not just the antisocial thing, its when I have to charge the bleeding thing every sodding day!
& sometimes more than once

I liked charging my phone once a week (& using it regularly)

Smartphones aren't even that smart & seem to require constant updates to keep them alive

Been thinking about dusting off the old blackberry pearl as my iphone is pants for email & many other things
