Some of you may have seen a review I posted of the SkyCaddie SGX

SkyCaddie SGX Review

I'm now starting to seriously consider returning the unit. They released another update last night that seems to have killed a number of users units. The only fix appears to be to return it for a replacement.

So I'm now actually scared to sync the unit. And if you do it forces the update. So I can't upload scores or new courses.

Not a great place to be I'm sure you'll agree.:(

I do like the functionality on the SGX. But with all the problems people have been getting I'm starting to think there is something fundamentally up with the product

There are some other new units out from other vendors.

Callaway uPro, Garmin G3\G5, Golfbuddy World Tour.

Anyone got any of the new units. Any good ? I've read the reviews, but then the reviews of the SGX never mentioned any of the issues all the users have been getting. I'm interested in some real world use !

Oh and before people suggest Freecaddie, Golfshot etc. Yep, like them some really good products, tried pretty much all of them, but prefer a dedicated unit. :D

Hi

Just ordered a Callaway U Pro in place of my SG5. Wont arrive till next week so cant give any views yet. Kinda glad i didnt get the SGX as it does seem to have been rushed out without proper testing (which customers seem to be doing at the moment....)

In the meantime i will continue using my Bushnell 1600 which is great.

I posted on the SG forum and got some feedback the quite a few users had updated ok. So I gave it a go.

And guess what. I've now got a dead SGX !

I have been on the phone with support for over an hour and I now need to send it back. And it could be 7-14 days min before I get a replacement.

I think I just want my money back now ! Not a happy bunny.

Very poor for a top-end product.

Can underdstand why they needed to update it - its only been out 5 minutes.

Hope it gets sorted soon

There is almost an update a week at the moment to fix bugs, add functionality etc.

We in the UK have had it easy compared to the US guys who have had it a few months before us. By the time we got it a lot of the problems had been sorted.

IMHO this product just isn't ready yet. Not what you'd expect from a respected brand like skycaddie.

Hi Westy,
I must have got lucky with mine....I have installed all the updates so far with no problems. Does feel like a game of Russian Roulette though, not knowing if it will die on the "operating table" during and after each upload.
Pretty disappointed with how many course have been fully mapped as well. I've yet to play a course which has, (except for Bearwood Lakes in the Trilby Tour when we weren't allowed electronic devices!!)

Glad to hear yours is ok rick.

Used mine at the Grove and Batchworth park a few days after getting it. Both are fully mapped and I really do like how the device works.

I don't really want to get rid of it as I think when it works it's great and I can really see the potential.

I think that's the bit that really annoys me. This is and could be a fantastic product if it was stable.

But as you say it does feel like Russian Roulette with the updates. And you can't not update it as it won't let you.

Glad I kept my SG 2.5 so I'll have something this weekend.

Does sound as though its been rushed out without being fully tested and the major bugs sorted. A shame as SC is a pretty good device (well the SC5 is). I think they are trying too hard to be the dominant player in this market at the cost of quality. Its definitely put me off even looking at one and I have to say there are a few other models that would probably get my cash now if I decide to swap

That said my SC5 is still going strong. The battery works fine and lasted for 1 shot short of three rounds on the Longest Day. I didn't use it in the first game at 4.30am but put it on for the 2nd. I turned it off when we stopped for lunch and it was on all afternoon and died just as I needed a yardage over the water at the last in the final round. Pretty good going by any standard.
