At Carnoustie we've got "Lucky Slap", "Spectacles" and "South America" (named after a local in the 19th century, who, on the eve of embarking on a journey to the South Americas to spread the golfing gospel, fell asleep steaming drunk in one of the bunkers of the 10th and subsequently missed his boat)
Our little course, The Buddon Links, has all her holes named after famous battles in history like Ypres, Waterloo, Somme and El Alamein.
Anyone got any interesting stories about how their course came up with the names of certain holes?

Our 14th hole is called the Garpit which is named after a racecourse on William Dalgleish of Scotscraigs land ,which in 1817 had the original 6 holes built inside the racecourse and it was played 3 times.

No names on the holes at my current club but my old course, Crowborough Beacon has a couple of interesting ones.

6th. Lovely par 3. "The speaker"...named after a Mr Gully who was a speaker in the House of Commons.

16th. Really good par 4. "Slaughtermans"...named because it was the site where customs officers once slaughtered a group of smugglers using the route from the South Coast to London.

Jeez I miss playing there.

I know that the 1st hole at Royal Dornoch is called "First".

Not sure where that derives from but I'm guessing that such blue sky thinking could only come from the same consultants the Scottish Government employ at £50,000 a pop for such matters.

They've shown even greater imagination in calling the 18th "Home" which I'm pretty sure is unique too.

one of the courses i play in the winter, charleton, collinsburgh, fife, has what i will put up for debate as an.....interestingly named 18th hole- "guid wife".....for the non scots that means "good wife".....hmmmmm, is there such a thing......shhhhhhhhh, shes sitting nxt to me on the couch!!!

I was under the impression that all courses had names for their holes.
Is this not the case?

:)

Not in my experience. I hate names for holes other than those which make some logical sense.....

I'd like to see some more fun names for holes.

Slicer's end
Nasty-tree-lined-grimness
Big fat bunkers
Quarry of death
Avoid the train (tracks).....
Naughty ditch
Driver's the wrong club
No chance of par
End of Medal

Anyone care to add?

We have a hole called Hades - which dependent on what ancient mythology you take the meaning from can mean Hell.
We also have a hole called Stonehenge...which is strange as it is nowhere near the site (course in the middle of Manchester) and it doesnt have any huge stone monoliths!...weird

I call our 11th "shithouse" for two reasons
firstly if you don't hit your tee shot into position you can't make the green in two so a bad tee shot is normally followed by the said word
Secondly it is where the shithouse is on the course.

Very apt placement
