Hi y'all,

A mate of mine fancied taking in all 3 of the above for his 40th birthday weekend. He is now considering putting Royal Troon in the mix. If so which of the 2 would you go for?

Also looked at 2 cottages in gatehouse of fleet - looks a nice place, is it? A bit far from southerness and Powfoot, but may be better as there may be 8-10 of us going.

Powfoot is very good but its also the poor sister in that trio. I say that without having played Silloth yet but I'm looking forward to my trip in March as I've only ever heard good things about Silloth. I really really enjoyed Sotherness and I did a review of it on here.

Thanks Craw,I'll search for it. I've checked out the recent posts also. My mate has played one of Powfoot and Southerness, so will have some idea.

Having a breather on this post are you? :)

Hi Peter
I played Southerness and powfoot a few years ago. Southerness is a great course, lots of gorse lined fairways that you Have to hit, stunning when its in bloom in spring. It's quite flat but don't let that put you off,the gorse defines most of The holes. It's a great course, definately one of my favourites.

Powfoot isn't in the same class but its still a good very enjoyable course.About 6 of the holes have a parkland feel. I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

if you was to play Silloth I think you'd have to do it on the way there or back as its a fair drive from the area your looking at staying.
I know a lot who say Silloth is a better course than Southerness, I'm not sure, there quite different courses. But both are absolutely top class.

The best advice I can give you is don't stay in Castle Douglas! The locals were kicking off with each other all night, Not what we was expecting TBH. Kirkudbright is supposed to be OK.

Id go for Silloth on the way up then Southerness while your there, whatever you decide I'm sure you'll enjoy it:thup:

Cheers Davey. Same as the Craw in the Scottish advice.

I've stayed in Kircudbright before, which is a decent place. Although an England V Croatia (Euros or World cup game) was going on one night, so the 60+ year olds we were with wanted to keep a low profile. When I've stayed there before, we played Colvend, Kircudbright, Newton Stewart and one or two others.

I know Silloth is about 40 mins away from the M6, so would be on the way up or back, if we pick that.

I'll ask my mate to see if he has played Powfoot or Southerness before, and go from there.

Hi i'm not one to write on here much when you mentioned silloth i felt compelled, silloth is with out doubt a fantastic course i've played golf for 25 years and played a few open venues and i would say it comes very close to that standard, it's not tricked up or imposibly difficult if you get a decent day weather wise it's my favorite course i've played at dozen times and never tire of it i travel 2 hours to get there as well. I've also played southerness once was good but a little flat. not played powfoot but what ever you do don't miss out on silloth !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stranraer is a nice track, better than Powfoot I'd say. I'm not sure how far it is from Gatehouse of fleet though, it could be a tidy drive.
Theres a few mediocre holes but there's quite a few stunners as well. Worth a trip if its not to far.

Stay in dumfries far more friendly,as for the golf Southerness is a fantastic links course and recommended, then play either Dumfries and Galloway or Dumfries and County.
Only my opinion, but definatly body swerve Powfoot.

Powfoot is not in the same class as Silloth and Southerness, the last third of the course is more parkland in nature and lets it down in my view although it is not a bad track.

Always going to rate Silloth as I'm a member there but it is quality and playing Southerness is always a highlight of my season. You can see Silloth from Souherness on a clear day (check the pic I posted yesterday), its 8 miles between the two in a straight line. The problem is its about 60 miles between the two track by road and about 90 mins I would guess.

Quertr, you stole my thoughts.

Surprisingly it is 95 miles from Gretna to Stranraer. Stranraer is a good wee Braid course and clubhouse with a couple of stunning holes. Portpatrick Dunskey is also close by. Portpatrick is a lovely wee 'tourist' harbour village with a good selection of pubs and hotels. Kirkudbright [Kir-coo-brie] is a lovely 'artists' town. Royal Troon is really going to extend your trip by another 70 miles, nice club but not the greatest of Open courses IMVHO.

I feel I need to visit Portpatrick again, Like you say DFT a lovely harbour village, very Devonesque. I wasn't overly keen on the course though,I think I was expecting too much of it, I much preferred Stranraer.
