i started playing golf about a month ago now, and have been playing rounds about 5 days a week for the past few weeks as i have had alot of spare time.

i have recently got pains just by my left shoulder blade,.. is this a common golf injury?

the pain mainly comes when i actually make contact with the ball/ground during my swing... so i am thinking this could have started the pain... maybe some sort of RSI from hitting the ground with my club too much.

or maybe it is a pulled muscle, that i never used before i started playing golf.

needless to say i have stopped golfing until the pain goes, as it got really bad when i was golfing on monday.

I tend to get a pain more in my right muscle particularly if I've hit loads of balls at a range and think its mainly muscle based/RSI. A few painkillers usually does the trick but I need to stretch it more than normal if I'm playing the next day

Yuzo,

This sounds like a frozen shoulder, a trapped nerve under the scapula. Is it almost impossible to reach with your fingers and difficult to massage?

If so you need a good physio. When I suffered with this my phyhsio put it right in 24 hours.

But you are playing a LOT of golf all of a sudden haveing only just started. My physio says that most golfers dn't warm up properly but just go out and play risking injury every time, an golfers tend to 'overplay' as the game is quite addictive!

Sadly because of this lack of discipline I have become a bit of an instant authority on golf related injuries, so don't follow my example.......don't overplay, rest a few days between rounds and warm up before a round

I agree with the overplay point. I'm off this week (initially to play the Belfry and then to have an operation) and I've tried to cram as much golf and practice in as I can as I won't be playing for a few weeks. Fortunately I swing a club most days so my body is fairly use to the stress and I stretch before I hit any balls but it may be you've overdone it and trapped the nerve or tweaked a muscle

Always do some gentle rotational stretching before playing. Golden rule.

However, I have similar issues, which come from a rotational problem in my spine. This cannot be fixed (except by stopping golf altogether), and feels like cramp in the muscle between my shoulder blade and spine. This is there 24 7. Nice.

Go see a physio. He may be able to sort it.

just done a search on the internet and this seems a very common problem in golfers.

thanks for any advice, just hope it doesnt keep coming back when i play golf,.. i wouldnt want to give the game up :(

got a golf lesson with the pro on saturday aswell, may have to cancel that.

get this a lot, though usually I wake with it not as a result of golf. Impossible to get to the site, stretching etc does nothing, and can last two or three days.

I've got to the point where I moan about it for a bit then go out and play.

Could be a number of reasons,(already mentioned) but doing too much golf can cause this, especially if you dont have a warm up system.

Warm days dont mean you are warmed up to play, your muscles need to be gently stretched into the form they will be during play, failure to do this can result in spasms, muscles pulled, nerves trapped and simple aches and pains.

I have made this mistake before and ended up with what I am guessing you have, that pain in your shoulder just under the collar bone that you cannot reach to massage??????? It was caused by playing without any warm up!

May i suggest you consult a doctor?
Surely that would be better than a bunch of t'internet forummers???

He only told us what his problem was, he didnt ask for a reccomendation of treatment, Im sure he knows Doctors are out there? :)

Shoulder pain, back pain, leg pain, hand pain, arm pain - I've got the lot at the moment.
Took the Boy punting in Oxford yesterday and I hurt in places I didn't even know I had.
