Should shops be open Boxing Day?

Many countries in Europe don’t open the day after Christmas. Could never understand this country’s obsession with shops being open all hours and all days.

Loved being in Germany where shops had a late night ( 2000 hrs) on Thursday closed by 1300 on a Saturday expect the last one of the month and closed on a Sunday.

Most people who want shops open on a Sunday have never worked in retail and most probably never had to work on Sunday either.
Ah but in the UK shopping is listed as a pastime/hobby ??

I don't go into shops on Boxing Day and on the whole I think they should be closed, supermarkets in particular have no real history of BoxingDay opening.

On the flipside Boxing Day sales have gone on for decades. If you are in a clothes shop etc then surely you know this and accept it as part of the job. Same as for people in the pub and restaurant trade. It isn't as if this has been sprung on you.

A lot of supermarkets are clothes, electrical, phone, perfume, toys etc shops now as well as groceries..shouldnt they be allowed to cash on Boxing Day Sales as well..?

I know in London we now run a Saturday service on boxing Day itself (regardless of what day) due to demands for shopping

Not sure this year haven't read the timetable yet

I see what you are saying. Possibly so ?. I tend to view them as food based still but that is outdated now. Perhaps the tipping point is if your floor space is given over to more than 50% food and drink, and you are retail, then you can not open on Boxing day? This affects shops over a certain size, to exclude the independent, corner shop style.

Mind, your mean. I was giving supermarket staff the day off ?

Your big Superstores will open if they think enough people will come in and buy.
Obviously if they're prevented by law they won't but I knew a Manager at big Tesco and he said they could open 24/7 365 and there would virtually always be someone in the shop.
We're a strange bunch.

Yep, as with journalism and politics. We get what we want/deserve.

I'm happy for supermarkets to shut on Boxing Day. Most people buy way too much for Christmas anyway so hardly likely to starve for the shops not being open. A lot of stores start their sales on Boxing Day and don't think that will change any time soon so there will be retail opportunities for those that want them. Staff seem happy enough to work (or they wouldn't open) so if they open their doors people will come. Personally I'll be on the golf course playing/walking my Christmas dinner off and hopefully having a beer or two after if the clubhouse is allowed to reopen

Yeah cos the staff have a say in whether big chains open their shops or not lol. They are open despite what the staff want not because in a lot of cases

Exactly
Decision made at Head Office and then its left to the managers to get enough people to come in.
Probably couldn't make them but, let's be honest, its not a normal Xmas and a lot of people would just be sitting at home watching the telly this year.
Double time as it's a Bank Holiday? Many wouldn't turn it down

Hang on, (to all who are happy to see shops close, for the staff) while the thread title is shops, if they're closed then all golf courses and clubhouses must be closed too, yes?

No difference between a course worker and a shop worker
Shut all courses for 4 days ??

My youngest daughter has worked retail and hairdressing in a couple of shopping centres, and I can tell you if the centre management decree a certain day or period the centre is open for shopping then the shops within and their staff have no say in the matter. If a shop decides it's not going to open, they are fined/punished.
Don't for a minute think that the shop staff have any say in the matter.

All shops should be closed on Boxing day. Apart from golf shops obviously so we can all spend our vouchers.

So M&S will be fined for every shopping centre store that is closed on Boxing Day?
I can’t answer for M&S and every centre around the country, but I know the hair salon chain and before that bag retailer my daughter worked for were expected to be open Boxing Day, and when the salon wasn’t they were hauled over the coals and punished by the centre management. The shops that enter these centres will sign contracts that binds them to open when the centre says so for every minute of the centre shop opening times.

My wife used to work on the management side at the Metro Centre and I would back up your comments 100%. They check on shops constantly that they are open for the hours that the centre is open. If they are repeat offenders then their leases will be terminated. It is all laid out in their leases, you know what you are taking on before you sign. Brutal if you are a small outfit but they are very clear about it. There is always another shop looking to get in there if you don't stick to the terms.

M & S, different beastie, particularly in the current climate. Not in M & S interest to do this too often though, normally they want to be open all hours and would be a shop having the hump if others in the centre were closed.
