hello it is my first post and i am just searching for some opinions on the difference in irons. i have been playing a year now and play to about 10 on average my best round being 79 on a par 72. i use donnay irons and am looking to upgrade to a better set but am unsure whether they will be worth the money. what are the differences in the quality of irons. thank you shane.

I've changed irons every 3-4 years and have never found it improved my game until this last time when I went for a full custom fit including shaft, if you have the opportunity I'd say go for it but if its just for another "off the peg" set I'd save your cash.

In my opinion donnay arent a great quality brand golf club, and they're aimed more at people that wanna try the sport with out spending over the odds and finding out they do/dont like it.

Your obviously a very good golfer and im sure that you would definitely benefit from buying a better set of irons. something like mizunos, titleist or callaways are a safe bet. You dont need to rush into buying a brand new set as a 3yr old or so second hand (as long as the grooves are still good) or just an older model set would do,

Is this a wind up, playing a year and your playing around ten with donnay irons. 79 on a 72 course.

If true, keep the donnay’s, don’t change. :)

this is not a wind up i started playing this time last year on a par 3 course with my dad and now i play round the full course and on average shoot 82.

my mate little matt was shooting 84 after 2 weeks work experience at cobtree when he was at school i had been playing for 2 years by then and just about breaking 100

how low does he shoot now i am just curious to how low i can go i am 18 and so have plenty of time to improve. i would like to shoot 77 by the end of the summer. i was thinking about buying second hand irons to help lower my score.

Where do you play and how old are you. If this is an honest assessment of your game then you do have some decent potential. These Donnays are aimed at entry level golfers and in my opinion if you want to improve further you'll need to upgrade. What you choose is down to you. You can go for something like my TP's or something like the Mizuno MP58 stc which have some of the characteristics onf a blade (small head, thin top line) but have some degree of cavity and forgiveness.

Alternatively there is a huge Ping (both I and G15's) following and Cally and Titleist too. The bottom line is to try before you buy. Why not have a word with your club pro and decide where you want to go next and whther lessons and a change in technique would be a better and cheaper option

i play at halesworth golf club in suffolk, i used to be very accurate with my irons but throw away chances with poor putting, now i have improved my putting im not hitting as many greens very frustrating. i have never played with blades before i do know that they are for better players but i am under the impression that they are less forgiving, i dont think this would suit my game, any opinions welcome.

Shane if your hitting the ball that well with the donnays the chances are there's a helpful amount of offset in them....If your comfortable with them look for an Iron thats of similar size which wont throw you too much......If you can get hold of older pings or Callaways then im sure that they would fit the bill....Check around the shops something will pop up.......

i felt very comfortable with my irons when it was dry because i could pitch it in front and run the ball on but now it has rained i cant seem to stop the ball on the greens becuase i am catching the ball a bit thin.

Its probably not the clubs fault mate.....More like a swing fault!

i was thinking between £200-300 somewhere around that mark for a good set of used irons that would hopefully give me some extra performance. there must be some difference between donnay and calloway irons. other than the price lol.
