I'm thinking of changing my irons and I need some advise other than from a salesman. I'm currently playing off 10 and using fitted MX100's. I've always had a LOT of back spin using these can be upto 15 foot (depending in the shot) and when I played last week I noticed I was getting a lot more high on my shots than my partner who was using some TM's. My 5 irons went about as high as his 9 irons and I seem to be loosing a lot of distance on him.
My question is, do you think I would benefit from an upgrade to a more workable iron rather than an improver iron?

Could be you need to change your balls!

If you are finding fairways and greens then do not change your irons.

On main reason to change irons is not getting control resulting in large dispersion.

I think the MX100's were designed as GI clubs and so will give a high ball flight. You clearly don't have any ball striking issues if you get that much sping but off 10 I think there will be a lot of clubs out there that will give you less spin and a lower flight. Shop around and try a few I15 and the Mizzy range are popular so may be a good starting point but what about the Nike pro combo range. There are new TM's due out soon (forged) too

A little over a year ago when the MX100 were newish I had a chat with a guy at the National Fitting Center in Oxford about them with the idea of getting some fitted. He said that I would be better off with MX200 as the MX100 were more of a super game inprover club and not great for anything under about 25 handicap. I had told him I was about 22 at the time.

At the end of the day it has to be that old thing of, go and try some other irons with a radar and see if the trade off stats are sounding good. I would like to say that I think you could find alot more preformance from a more player type iron, I even think you would find performance from a G15 or an X22/4.

Do you have your eye on anything? thats always a good start, if you have seen something that looks hitable for you.

Do you know your swing speed?

I haven't seen anything special as i like the look of most clubs. I'd like to get fitted again but I'd like to be informed about which clubs would be best rather which is the best mizzy or TM for me.

My swing speed used to be about 90-95, don't think it's changed.

15 foot of back spin are you sure, sound like a lot are you hitting off mats?
Yep, off tees and fairways, but it's not 15 all the time, it's mostly 6-8'. My problem is I can't control it and the shots go too high and I can easily loose control in winds.

Backspin off tees?? I presume you're not hitting driver then....

I reckon the MP53's will be right up your street - either that or some good 2nd hand 52's or 57's. You'll get a lower flight from them.

What is best for you I guess is the right shaft. For the head its then down to what looks right to you eye. Then try a selection that you could live with with some sort of flightskope V your current clubs. No one here can tell you what is best for you so you need a start point. I can tell you I love my MP-53, they are not long but my dispertions is better than my last set.

What he said! At my recent fitting it was amazing the different amount of backspin I was getting between shaft and head changes. Around 3000 rpm difference in some cases! And too much backspin will rob distance and send the ball miles high.

Is that estimated swingspeed with a 6 iron? that seems to be the norm when quoting swingspeeds for irons.

The good news is that backspin needs good ball contact, so I guess you have that. It is also highly dependent on the golf ball, so you should consider switching to a harder less spinny ball. Finally, worth checking the fitting of the clubs. Get on a launch monitor and see what spin rates and angle of strike you have. Could be that you are really hitting down on the ball, or that the head and or shaft are unsuitable for your current strike.

just been to Scotsdale Golf nr me, they're just having a refurb and one of the things being done is a new state of the art, top of the range fitting centre. Apparently there's only 4 of these in the country, 1 at St Andrews and the other 2 are in pro's houses. Should be ready in early March.

mmmmm, can't wait.
