Short irons use to be my favourite clubs to use, striking them well everytime.
Longs irons were something i suffered with, i've spent a lot of time on my 3 & 4 irons and now i'm pretty good with them only for my favoured shorts irons to turn into my nemeisis.

What i've done now is to hold my short irons higher up the grip and long irons further down the grip making the difference in club length much less.

Is this ok or should i hold all clubs in the middle of the grip?

Often a lot of probs like this are psychological, a form of overthinking the fault.

Have you ever hit a 3 iron sweetly? if so, you must know what to do.
You have already said how well your short stuff is, so you must know what to do.

The secret to many of these problems is freeing your mind of golf dross. Try a round where you dont give a stuff, just relax, it will come back to you. If it doesnt, then maybe a pro visit is in order.

The problem with changing your grip on clubs is that it will automatically change where you stand in relation to the ball. By gripping down on a long iron you should move fractionally closer to it to compensate and maitain the correct posture. It may be that you are standing too far (or over compensating and too close).

My advice would be to go for a lesson to make sure it isn't another swing fault creeping in. Personally, I hold my clubs in the same place throughout the bag unless I'm pitching, chipping or playing a low punch. There is enough to worry about without thinking about how far up or down to hold it club by club. Hold it in one place in a fairly orthodox manner and see if you become more consistent.

You must grip the clubs the same, its a fundamental requirement for consistency.

imho

....unless you're intending a slightly weaker shot with any given iron etc.

The irons are different lentghs for a reason. As Chris has said, you need to hold them all the same for consistency.

Just have a couple of lessons and learn how to use them. Dont do anything different apart from the ball position.
