Have recently shortend my driver by just over an inch should I now add weight to the club head or is that not required?

No way...leave it be...

My pro cut down my Ping G5 to 45" to match my other drivers.
He said if I could notice the difference he'd let me take anything off the shelf to replace it....he was that confident...

Swing weight WILL be affected. It's simple physics. An inch reduction in length is equal to SIX SW points. Now, whether or not you can feel it is a personal thing. For me, I have to add some weight back or a driver feels like a wand and I can't feel the clubhead.

yes, obviously..

I can't believe this (even if it's true, which I doubt)

All my clubs are rated as D0 or D1, I bought clubs with this SW on purpose.

Maybe I'm too rubbish to notice a sudden change of 6 points??

Dave, why do you doubt me? I've been building my own clubs for a few years now and have had this well known fact confirmed over and over again by master club builders.

I'm in two minds over this one.

I agree it changes the swing weight...that's plain science.

I just can't believe a full 6 points.

I have read "differing" views on SWs and added lead.

Rumour has it even tour pros struggle to tell any small differences. It's possible (I guess) that my Ping G5 is now around C5 but I just don't reckon that is the case. That would make it "feel" as light as my sisters Driver, and that's a crazy idea.....

Then again, if you have seen the evidence, then I bow to your knowledge on this one.

Dave, I may owe you an apology, mate. I think it may be 4 points, not 6. Let me check it out and get back to you.

Either way, no backing down necessary. I'm more interested in how a club feels to swing. I bought a rescue "presuming" it was the same SW as my other clubs and it turned out to be quite a bit "heavier".

I've tried a few D3 or D4 irons and don't like them.....I might make it my business to find out if there are benefits one way or t'other. I always guessed as a medium speed swinger (I'm not a girl-speed, despite what I tend to state in a self-derogatory way) I go for the lighter side when choosing which club feels right for me. Maybe a heavier iron might add a bit more ooomph??

Hi Dave,
It is correct 3 swingweights per half inch. I'm like 23rdman I need to be able to feel the club head. I've just been through all this getting my driver shortened and properly swingweighted.

Hi bobmac
My H/cap is 25 and I was advised that by shortening my driver I would get more control off the tee. Played yesterday and found this to be true. Much better acuracy kept the ball on the fairway on most holes also found keeping the ball lower giving more run. Still thinking about adding some weight but not sure yet.

Good news.....don't rush the added weight, please.

Hi Bobmac,
My experience is the same as bignev one inch off the driver
(now 44.5) resulting in much more consistent on centre hits much tighter shot dispersion and more distance (from the more on centre hits)

Yep, I took my Ping G5 down from 45.75 to 45, to match my Callaway and Ben Sayers.

Interesting how before the ball mark was towards the heel and now it sits in the middle of the face....

I suppose If I hadn't used a 45" driver since the stone age, and started with the Ping, I'd have been ok???

Some of these modern drivers are up to 47.....mad.....

serious question - could you not just grip down the shaft on your driver? by moving teh pivot point closer to the driver head, would thisnot have the same effect?

Did try gripping down the clud at first but found my fingers off the grip so shortening was the better option.
Medal comp on monday will see how it goes under presure before thinking about weights bob.
