Interested to find out whether there is a consensus as to forumer's perspectives on what a short/medium/long AMATEUR golfer is in terms of driver distance off the tee.

In yards, I would say:

170 / 220 / 220+

gona be a difference between ELITE amatuers & ordinary club amatuers like ourselves .. il stick to the NON elite

Up to 180 = short

180 to 230 = medium

230 to 270 long

270 up get a short game & join the elite boys

Regarding us forumers same distances but thats a 6 iron off the tee :p

Yes very much a short hitter here around 200-210 but to me I would rather have a 200 yd drive on the fairway or light rough than a 240 power hit in the wilds which is what normally happens to me.

Distance such a variable thing but new bunker on our 2nd is 275yds off back tee to catch long hitters. And talking about 6 iron - I carried one 160yds off fairway to green on Sunday. In addition it seemed like I had hit it higher as well - maybe I just struck it properly for a change. Anyway that bit is off-topic.

200 short, 235 medium, 270 long

When looking at standard scratch they work on the principle of the average scratch player hitting around the 260-270 mark iirc.
As such I'd say:

upto 230 = short
230-260 = med
260 + = long

It sounds like you didn't expect it to reach the green (correct me if I'm wrong), so just out of interest, why did you use a 6 iron?

I read it as him expecting not to carry it to the green, but to land short and roll on, but the extra height gave extra carry and also presumably stopped the ball on the green too?

Or maybe I'm completely wrong..!

Short upto 210 yards
Medium 210-240
Long 240+

I am talking about genuine distances not peoples guestimations. The amount of people who think they hit it 260 but in reality 'only' hit it 220 yards.

Quite a few years ago I once drove a wound Dunlop 65 ball over 400 yards with a persimmon headed driver....no bull.
[It was downhill on a fast running links with half a gale behind]

But if you asked me them how far my average drive was I would have said 240 yards.

Thats whats meant by forum distance! which is a drive you hit once, downhill down wind and bounced off a sprinkler head. :)
