Short game - Chippers.

Surely it is personal preference and what works in getting the ball near the hole. I use a chipper off the green and I laugh when people take the proverbial but I end up nearer the hole.

It is all about what you are comfortable with and % of success rate

Absolutely agree..

But I still consider a chipper to be a waste of a club. Using the 6/7/8 iron like a putter, even gripping right down the shaft, will produce the same shot as a chipper. If you can hit the same shot with any number of other clubs then that club becomes redundant.
If I was to use one I'd have to drop a club. I can hit more than 1 shot with any club in my bag bar the Driver - which is all-out distance, nothing more, nothing less and I wouldn't fancy using a chipper off the tee. :D

surely all clubs are down to personal choice & how they work for you. I do agree the lesson might be better value in the long run tho as you will learn different shots & feel etc , but if you can knock it dead with a chipper never give that up ..

100% agree with this comment - if it works and you are confident why wouldn't you use it.

My personnal experience is that when I had a lesson on chipping and using other clubs than what I thought I should be using - wedges or a putter - round the green to try and get the ball up and down I realised the versitility having a bigger range of shots gives you. One of the classics for me was going straight under the ball with a wedge when it was sat up in semi rough or even in thicker fringe grass - now using a 7i or 8i as the shot dictates gets it there 'every' time. It has certainly helped me bring my H/C down a bit this season so I would suggest this is an alternative to using a chipper and getting an extra club in the bag if you need it.

Because it's a chipper!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could light a flash bang in here and run a mile... but I won't.

Get down the club, put some balls in the fringe and practice.

I still have my chipper in the cupboard and loved it when it was in the bag and could wipe a few smiles off faces when you knock one up close. After joining my club in october just thought it was about time to chip properly and now use my 7i,8i or pw depending on what the shot requires. As for deep rough no chipper is going to help I'm afraid. Each to there own I say, some don't like rescue clubs and insist on using long irons which is basically the same situation. If you're happy using one and using a space go for it. It's a game of fun and enjoyment at the end of the day.

Yawn - heard it all before.

Been my temporary solution for 12 years. Why does no-one go on about a lob wedge being a waste of space as it can only do one thing - lob?

Why should anyone else be bothered about the 14th club I choose to have in my bag - and I'm completely beyond being even faintly embarrassed by the "experts" who sniff at it.

Good shout mate! I completely agree with every single word of that!

It isn't the waste of space issue I object too, if you want such a one dimensional club in the bag that's up to you. I just believe that they should be banned in the rules of golf as they alter the way a shot is played. Why should someone who has a lousy shortgame be able to get this kind of aid when similar aids are not available to someone who struggles off the tee. By the way I use my LW for a range of shots/distances.

How?

Most of the posters in this thread say that you can play the same shot with a 7 or 8 iron so how is the way a shot is played altered?

Can you get a chipper without a hozel? The way my chipping is going, it could be a lot less embarrassing having a chipper than shanking my way around the green.
