Shank or slice?

Hey guys,

Overall my natural shape is a draw(hook on a bad day!!)
Everynow and then the ball shoots off to the right with a viscious slice which nearly goes 90 degrees usually with low trajectory.
My question is whether this sounds like a shank or just a bad slice. Will get some lessons soon but in the meantime was wondering what you think

cheers

It could also be the toe of theclub, if you normally turn the head through impact to get the draw spin, you might be overcooking the wrist action and meeting the ball with the end of the club. Ive done it a couple of times and it wasnt until i found the mark of the ball on the toe I realised what had happened on the range.

Sounds like a shank if it's near enough 90 degrees, I had a dose of them a couple of years ago and everything from a 5 iron up I was shanking at the time it was the only thing I was doing consistently.

check your fundamentals...ball in relation to stance; keep the ball in your periferal view; the "v's" of both index and thumbs should point to your right shouldish; and remember to take a nice easy swing...and don't try to leather it...but hey, i'm no golf pro. let us know the outcome

You would know if it was a shank or a slice/toe. They feel entirely different,I should know,I have the disease!

A Shank feels more solid, with a slice you can sort of feel it slide up the club.

Nico, the first time it happened to me it scared the living poo out of me, I hit one, then thought I was standing too close then moved 2 inches back then did the same again, 3,4,5,6 and on the 7th consecutive time I covered a ball in drywipe ink from a pen in my practice bag, hey presto off the toe, I honestly had no clue it was coming off the toe and not the hozzel.
Now I can tell where it makes contact (as you mentioned), it ususally happens on the practice range when Im experimenting with hooks and low shots.

If it happens on the course again try the cure I use, I play every shot with my feet together.

You lose some distance but it does actuall fix it,I once had to play the back 9 at Quinta South like this and got 18 points.

I know how debilitating it can be,I went from 5 to 7 a couple of years ago, even hit one between my legs onto mates elbow!

I think I caught the bug yesterday - nailed a good 4-iron off the 12th tee, got to the short 13th and every attempt at the 7-i tee shot went 90 right (on my own and quiet so had lots of attempts). I think it was toeing but possibly too loose a grip as well, just couldn't get it. Only seemed to get the problem with the 7 - weird.

Gill, looking at your clubs I have a notion for a FT-5 driver - what do you make of it -any good?
Also I used to have the 904 3 wood with a V2 shaft but I just couldn't get it working, I must be too weak - how is it with the Aldila shaft?

The FT-5 is fantastic - the harder you hit it the better it goes!

I get quite alot of height and carry - which is perfect for both winter & summer on my course.

It also sounds really good!

The 904 is a strange club for me. Some weeks it is brilliant - down the middle every time and long. But then then the next week not so good.

But perhaps that's more down to me than the club??

It is normally easy to get off the deck anyway and looks sexy as hell - but like the driver you have to hit it hard.

I think alot of people who have stiff shafts forget that you have to hit the ball hard for them to work properly - after all that's why you had stiffs fitted in the first place isn't it, the speed of your swing!
