All to do with your swing speed and tempo. Generally though the faster your swing speed is you will need a stiffer shaft.

Also depends on whereabouts in your swing you apply most of the acceleration, what angle you tend to strike the ball and how consistently.

Rule of thumb is that for 'best' results, you should play the softest shafts you can control.

Shafts also come in different weights. It used to be that stiffer shafts were heavier, but as technology improves you can now get stiff/lighter shafts. Lighter shafts let you swing the club faster which means more club head speed which equals more distance. However, get a shaft that is too light and it will be harder to control. The best way to decide which shaft is the best for you is to get fitted on a launch monitor by a reputable fitter/pro.

Softer shafts are graphite?

What effect do different shafts have and how does a pro decide which shaft is best for a player?

If you get fitted by Mizuno, the computer spits out the most suitable shaft for you, based on data acquired during your swing. It's all very complicated these days.

The shaft can effect how high the ball flies, how much power you get, the dispersion (left to right grouping), how much spin you get, etc.

Mizuno have a little gizmo called swing DNA. It is basically a shaft with a device attached to measure stresses in the shaft.

Find out more here

http://golf.mizunoeurope.com/custom/swing-dna.php

It will suggest 3 different shafts which the numbers suggest are best for your swing.

You can find the nearest place to try it here.

I tried it and found it useful in getting an idea of the kind of shaft I should be looking for. Exactly which shaft you choose will still be a matter for you and what feels good and gves you the results in terms of flight, control and distance etc that you want. You may need something like trackman/flightscope to finalise that if you are really serious about getting it exactly right.

Just check that the place will give you the DNA numbers, a place near me will only let you have them for £50, and that is not even taken off if you order, they charge £25 for the fitting if you dont want the numbers
