Seve at St Andrews?

BBC Sport reports that Seve is on course to make the pre-Open Champions tournament at St Andrews. Must admit that after watching the Peter Alliss interview with him a few months back, and the Sports Personality of the Year, I would've said no chance. However if the great man is indeed on the road to recovery, then I would love to see him tee it up again one last time. Absolute legend of the game and my all time favourite golfer.

Hopefully the Beeb will also devote some substantial coverage for it rather than 5 or 10 minutes in their pre-Open preview show.

Spot On Pieman ! It would be fantastic to see him at St Andrews in whatever capacity and I'm sure the attendance figures would show a substantial increase on the day(s) when he is there. I for one will be making the trip to see him.

My memories of Seve are of his devil may care, swashbuckling style full of power and flair. I don't want to see a frail shadow of his former self racking up 100+ shots in the greatest tournament in golf.

I don't think there is a hope in hell of him playing in the proper event. He sadly just isn't fit enough. However a four hole event in front of his fans would be a fitting end to a great career

The 4 hole past champions is exactly the event that I am thinking he will be trying to play. Walking up the 18th with the stands full alongwith fellow champions would be most fitting.

He will be very lucky even to make that. Sadly, I say he won't be there.

I think he'll be there, mainly because I think he's set this as a target for his recovery etc. No way he'll play the full comp but I think the 4 hole should be achievable. Let's hope he makes it, what better way to bow out, won't be a dty eye in the house

C'mon Murph...if you are gonna quote the mecca of golf please get it correct...next you will be calling it The British Open!

So what do you think then. Play the 18th or just a walk down the hole. I think the 18th is suitable for him to play. Not a tough drive, fairly short and a chance to actually hole out on the last green one last time and maybe repeat that fist pump

I think one hole would be all it needs. A nice drive, pose for posterity on the bridge, hit it onto or near the green make a four or five and then a big goodbye. Perfect.

Don't think there's a cat in hells chance of Seve playing the Open. But I really pray that he's able to play the 4 holes.

There's been a lot of talk recently about how much Tiger Woods has done for the game.

Seve did every bit as much for the game in the late 70's / 80's and he deserves that walk up the 18th and the reception as much as anyone who has ever played the game.

I think it's fair to say that both the European Tour and the Ryder Cup wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for Seve. I hope he is fit enough to play all four holes in the Champions knock before the Open. If he makes it, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he knocks it to similar distance on 18 then rolls in the birdie putt - cue celebration a la 84!!

Along with everyone else, here's hoping Seve makes it to St Andrew's and has that confident stride back again as he takes all the adulation from the stands. Even though many greats will hopefully be there, surely Seve will take all the plaudits and, like many others I believe that there would be very few dry eyes in the house.
