Sergio does a Dyson ?

All the arguments about trial by tv, line of putt, tapping down spike marks and pitch marks is all well and good, but for me the rule is wrong and needs addressing urgently. Why can you fix a pitch mark but not a spike mark?

Because it would result in players spending 5 minutes "gardening" before every putt while they ironed out every perceived imperfection in the surface.......and they'd still miss.

I can see no difference between this and the Dyson incident apart from the fact that Sergio is one of the "Untouchables" ala Tiger and they wouldn't risk upsetting him in the same way as one of the lesser tour stars. He definitely tapped down his line of putt whether it was a pitch mark or spike mark I could not say. Looks suspicious to me though.

The difference is it has been confirmed as a pitch mark by both the referee and the player and Dysons was a spike mark.

If that is the case then it is a closed topic and no more discussion is needed. Case closed. Let's go for doughnuts sarge!!

Why are people so desperate to have people outed as cheats? Sergio tapped down a pitch mark he'd repaired, that is not against the rules.

Words from a John Huggan article in Golf Digest...........Ah, but as so often is the case, the footage did not show the full story. Having gone some way to repairing a pitch mark in front of his ball, Garcia had merely paused to allow his playing partner, former PGA champion Martin Kaymer, to putt. Then, when the German missed, Garcia completed his task. All perfectly legal. All perfectly innocent.

Then don't allow pitch mark repair until after you have holed out. Like they don't allow spike mark repair until after holing out. Treat spike marks and pitch marks the same and there would be no ambiguity.
