Seems to be a fair bit of chatter about the video below. Does Sergio tap down something on his line?

Looks suspicious to me, almost not even looking at what he touched when crouching down ... which I would of thought you would be looking at if you were tapping down an old pitch mark. Not seen anything else in reports so far though.

Apparently they have ruled ....

Tour official later commented: “John Paramor is satisfied with Sergio’s version of the matter and that is the end of the issue.”

He was tapping down a old pitch mark.

Certainly didn't seem to the same as Dyson's, which was an obvious pressing down of a Stud damage.

Does demonstrate how 'careful' they need to be though.

Surely he got approval from his FCs... ..

To me, it looked to be to the right of his line. though if it is an old pitch mark, no problems there.
Looked pretty damn spot on his line from my view.

Important to know what the definition is though .....

Line Of Putt
The “line of putt’’ is the line that the player wishes his ball to take after a stroke on the putting green. Except with respect to Rule 16-1e, the line of putt includes a reasonable distance on either side of the intended line. The line of putt does not extend beyond the hole.

Trial by telly replay again - looks like he was flattening down something and if he says it was an old pitch mark then nothing to worry

To me it doesn't look like the kind of action to repair an old pitch mark.

it certainly appears wrong when players (anywhere, of any capability) simply 'tap down' pitch marks. the concept of tidying up a poorely repaired ptchmark doesn't work for me at this level either.

It would look more convincing if the player did a bit of gardening first with a tee or pitch mark thingie even if not really needed. The casual tap down looks dodgy.

I though you were supposed to consult/ask your fellow competitors if you wanted to tap down ANYTHING not apparent so that you don't get accused of cheating.

Is it not possible he asked them befit the vid was taken and was waiting for the right time.

Reports are suggesting it was a pitch mark he had repaired that wasn't shown on the footage. Apparently he and John Paramor went to the green where Sergio showed him the pitch mark which is why he was cleared of any wrong doing.

And this is why Trial by TV is, generally, a bad thing. Unless you see every second of every Competitors round you can't say what has and
hasn't been done
Obvious breaches will get picked up easily but you have to have seen all the footage....

the short clip definitely looks suspect, and a pre-meditated tap down, but if he'd already partly repaired a pitch mark it why wasn't it done properly 1st time.

I do think its great how we are all trusting the pros
