Sensitive thread possibly (organ donation)

Personally I think it should be mandatory, unless there is a medical reason not to.
To leave it to grieving families to decide immediately after a persons death is just plain wrong, and nothing short of torture.

To be fair, our doctors try and have the conversation at an earlier stage when the prognosis isn't looking good and death is a real possibility. It hopefully gives them time as a group to decide on what the patients wishes would be and whether to agree or not. Clearly this isn't always possible and it is then a far harder conversation

To turn it on it’s head, the loss of one life could save X number of lives inc a member of there own.

Definite from me, would be interested to know if the people that would opt out, would be happy to take an organ if they needed one though?

Got no choice if I go first, wife has already said she donor the hell out of me.

I am on the donor register as is my wife.
I donate blood too. They love me because I am B- and fairly rare.
I would like to see that people who do not give blood (without a medical reason or over a certain age) have to pay something towards any blood they receive. Nothing crazy, maybe like £20 a pint but something that might make them think that donation is a necessity. Same with organ dontation. Need a heart? Are you on the donor list?
Yes. Great, it’s free!
No. No worries, it’s x amount of £’s.

Why are relatives asked when the donor has already given consent? I really don't get that?

I don't see how thay could even be ethical or humane. People already pay for it as part of NHS contributions. Plus Healthcare givers jobs are to save lives not cash in on them.

Take fragger post as an example 23 units of blood at £20, so he'd have to stump up £460 before he could have his life saved despite probably having paid thousands in contributions over the years already. Or someone needs an organ to save a child's life but may not have the finances to do so, so would have to live the rest of their lives knowing they lost a child because someone wanted to charge them for organs they could afford. How is that ethical in a system we already pay for? That means putting a price on life, who sets that price. It would put extra pressure on Dr's and imo is just wrong.

I give blood and am registered to organ donor, I give it freely in hope that may save a life and one day should i or my kids need it that could equally be saved not by money but by the kindness of others and medical professionals that we're already paying for with our contributions.

Read the post again lad. Kids would be exempt as would folk who were medically unable to do so.
fragger would have had blood foc if he was a donor.
Right now we need people to register for organ donation and to give blood so that people can be helped. The way it’s currently being done isn’t working. I don’t give blood for my own use either, I give it to help others who need it to survive

No need read it again point stands, people NHS contributions so they've already paid and again unethical to ask someone to pay again to again. Your point of you give to save lives is how it should be but it shouldn't be a choice of making people pay more just because they don't give blood or choose to donate organs. All lives matter imo.

But helping the current broken system doesn’t matter?
Blood transfusions and organ transplants cost a lot of money. If everyone was contributing a little more at no real cost to them (1hour every few months to give blood) how much would that help?
At no point have I said that come lives don’t matter.

I used to be a bit unsure about being a donor. Could never really explain why but just the thought of being hacked up after death was grim.

Couple of years ago I joined the donor list though. Got to thinking that I work really hard at keeping fit and healthy so it would be such a shame to then let it go to waste when I pop my clogs.

Theres nothing to turn Tashmeboy. I think organ donation should be mandatory and only medical exemptions allowed.
My further point is that asking grieving familes so soon after someones death is wrong and akin to mental torture. I know quite a few cases where a person has died, and they have given their consent to donation but A member of the family has resisted in their immediate hour of grief, and so nothing is taken.
Take the choice away, and let someone else have a chance of a life to live.

I thought the new system meant you Could take organs without asking next of kin. Me I agree they can take what they want off me. But sister in law is adamant, they are not taking her eyes. Seeing as she had glasses like Diedre Barlow off Corra. They would be no good to anyone else anyway.
