Scotland Golf West Coast Appin Area

Hi I'm on holiday in Scotland next week near Appin on the west coast

HID has surprisingly agreed that I can take my golf clubs

Can anybody recommend a good club fairly nearby that's scenic as I expect we will walk round together with good facilities for lunch/drink evening meal

Unfortunately I've never played in that neck of the woods and I'm further South so don't know the clubs in the area. That said, this may give you an idea or two if no one else can advise.

Only really Dragons Tooth(Ballachullish) and Glencruitten (Oban) are within easy striking distance of Appin. If the weather is good they both provide a good walk, but the real Scottish gems are (much) further south. Likely your wife already knew this

Are courses generally OK with someone just walking round with you? My other half has no interest in golf but has asked before if she can come with me just to walk it and get out for a bit. I've always said I don't think she'd be allowed.

Machrihanish gc is a 4 hour round trip.

Don't think many places would have an issue with someone walking round with them provided they have suitable footwear (not sure about dress code in terms of jeans etc but I reckon walking trousers and trainers wouldn't have been an issue.

Never even thought to ask when my Mrs has joined me to walk round, and no one has ever raised it as an issue.

I regularly see people out walking around with golfers - seems relatively common in Scotland to me

Quite a few links courses will have public rights of way on them. Wouldn't be viewed as a problem at ours.

Glencruitten or Dalmally... GM did cover latter a few months back...

But I'll raise you a challenge..... 27 holes on two islands in one day...

Assume you have car, get Ferry Oban to Craignure at 0745.... drive to Fionnphort - 30 miles about and hour, ~0930 boat to Iona - brisk walk to Iona (again featured in GM few months back..), race round by noon, back to ferry to Fionnphort and drive around west, cutting through Salen and on up to Tobermory 2:30 tee off, done by 4pm, 30 min drive to Craignure and final 9 in 90 mins... done by 6pm... and get ferry back to Oban at 7pm....

That said, with tourists on Mull in summer you might need to drive a bit like this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aibcWP-hatw (thats part of road on way to Salen from Fionnphort...)

But if too much for a day trip ... go over anyway and take break by staying night in Tobermory after playing it, do Craignure following morning and head back to Appin via Fishnish-Lochaline ferry and go up round Loch Linnhe via Fort William or short cut back on Corran Ferry.

You'll get 3 rounds in and partner will have more varied holiday... also no problem with people accompanying players on these type of courses... turn up and play honesty box... golf as it should be, none of the stuffy urban rules and regulations...

With regards to hid walking round with me, one of the courses I play Goodwood Park has a spar hotel so you see quite a few partners walking round the golf course it's something I'm use to seeing, I suppose you would'nt see it so much on club type courses

you are taking about a very low populated area, so most of these coures won't be busy, idoubt you will have any problem with someone walking around with you.

Its also worth remembering these are small community courses run on shoe string budgets so don't expect Augusta like greens

I played Glencrutten yesterday looks short on the card but it's a nice and well kept little course most enjoyable round

Ended up by myself in the end
