Scored better with half set of clubs!

I got sick of lugging a full bag around this year and was only playing once a month to keep my hand in. Bought a cheap light bag and started taking a half set. 3w 5h 7i 9i Pw 56 and putter. Played some good golf. IMO it made me concentrate on course management and naturally took a lot of risks out. It got me shooting for greens instead of flags and my GIR's improved massively, leaving me with lots of birdie chances. Didn't make many, but didn't make many bogies either.

Looking back at this old thread I started.

Went out again today with only a half set in a 13 hole stableford comp at my club. Managed +4 gross for the 13 holes. Was one of the more enjoyable rounds in a while. It makes it fun trying to manufacture shots you wouldn't normally be faced with. Also the plus is being able to carry and leave the trolley at home

Went for 18 holes this morning and decided to use only a half set of clubs. Had read an online article in which a coach suggested this every so often to improve shotmaking

Driver, 3 hybrid, 5 iron, 7 iron , 9 iron, 52 deg wedge, putter.

I ended up with a 72 gross ( par 70) this is my best score of 2012. To say the least I was amazed. Had played on Wednesday with all my clubs and had a 77

Didn't miss my 3 wood or 4 iron in any way. The 6 and 8 iron would have been handy but just went a club extra and hit it softer. Pw and 56 deg I managed without

It's got me thinking do I ever again need my full set :)

Anyone here ever tried playing with half set? How did it go?

I play this way a lot in the winter as my mate ex pro told me to do so when i 1st started playing this game 14 years ago , a pencil bag as you said , i rotate the clubs next day or round , driver and putter are only clubs i dont rotate , this is so there is even wear so to speak , one other rule i use and its a must , if say its an 8 iron shot and i only got 9 iron or 7 iron i always hit more club , this improves your shot making and you learn to play with more control , play in swindles and little money games too , it will pay you back in the long term and you will become a better golfer for it

I've decided I'm going to continue doing this until qualifying comps are back. And like you said I plan on rotating the half set I use each time

wouldnt dream of it. i had a half set when i first started out. i didnt know how to swing or how far each club went. it wasnt so important at that time. now i know how far each club goes it makes sense to take as many as you can.

you may have scored well today but i have played many times without clubs i was supposed to put in the bag and i can tell you its alot easier with a full arsenal !

Ive got a couple of questions. Do those people who have had good knocks with half a set normally carry a full set? And if you miss the green/target do you normally miss short or long?

most people will carry the full allowance of 14 clubs. the only people i know that dont usually dont have 14 clubs. this doesnt really apply to anyone on here. we could fill multiple bags.
