Saving English Golf on SSN

Most clubs are not as bad as suggested here. Its almost unheard of that you must wear a jacket and tie in the clubhouse now. Knee length socks with shorts are also almost extinct as a rule. Cant see what is onerous about wearing a polo shirt and trousers, if you want to be trendy then there are some very modern golf clothes now. A tennis club would not have you play in jeans and a tee shirt, neither would a cricket or football team, golf is no different in this respect and seems to get a lot of unfair criticism.

Nothing wrong with a polo shirt and trousers but what is wrong with a round neck shirt and jeans?

Tennis is more active than golf and I can't remember seeing anyone play tennis in trousers except tracksuit trousers . As fr as t shirts in tennis have you seen what most top players were these days? They usually wear t shirts!

Same for football, t shirts near as damn it

As for cricket, outwith test matches there isn't much traditional white clothing on view

I remember my old club making a point of saying that the collarless golf shirts as were popular with Tiger Woods at the time would not be welcome on the course. That is golf gear, made by a golf company, smart looking but banned. I suspect that they would have a similar reaction to these new casual look golf shoes. Welcome at Augusta but not at your local club.

Football kit is a uniform, tennis is not played in jeans, cricket is also played in a uniform dress whether its white or not. I guess my point is that I cant believe that the saviour of golf will be allowing jeans on the course. I have nothing against jeans for casual wear, I have worn them for over 50 years, I dont like to see them on the golf course though, I consider them out of place and against the traditional dress of golf.

Pathetic isnt it.

Imagine if Freddie Couples turned up, sorry Sir you can't play in those shoes however you can borrow these hideous black and white traditional pair based on Victorian standards....

As I've said before I wouldn't wear jeans as I don't think that they are practical for any sport. Neither are cotton polo shirts or chinos in my opinion. But if others want to wear them what is the problem.

The only answer I ever hear is that they are not traditional.

Therefore what is the definition of traditional? 1970's? 1950's? 1920's? 1470's?

Who mentioned shoes. You are making an exaggerated argument now rather than an informed debate. Freddy does not turn up in jeans and a tee shirt for the Masters , does he?

That one was my fault. Merely made reference to the fact that my old club banned collarless golf shirts as worn by Tiger Woods (golf gear, practical, smart and banned) and all signs were that they were going to take a similar stance on the new, more casual golf shoes being released.

Thanks for the back up GB72! :)

Just don't get why people get so defensive and then as soon as you question their standards they go off in the huff.

All I asked is what is traditional wear for golf

No you never. You started posting silly pictures of Victorian dress and making exaggerated comments. I explained clearly my stance but you decided not to take any notice.

I really am out of this thread now as it is getting repetitive.

You said traditional, I asked what you mean by traditional which I will ask again , so yes repetitive.

Give me an answer and I will go away, promise!

I love the phrase 'smart jeans'.

No such thing. They are work wear. Like dungarees and boiler suits. No place on the golf course, in the club house, or on any one over the age of 20.

OK. I did explain it once but as you want me to explain again: A pair of trousers and a polo shirt. I wont get into details on shorts and socks as most reasonable people know exactly what is expected by the majority of clubs.

Brian, stop baiting the Scots, you're making a habit of it. They'll start throwing stones and we'll have to build that wall again.

Just follow the lead of McIlroy & Garcia by hugging it out.

Your right and I didn't even notice. Now Gloucestershire that's different, I have a kinsmanship there that could bring on a group hug.
