I get the same problem as well when on the main site, does get very irritating. It's not really a pop up either so I can't block it.

go to Google then there download section and get there google bar.
It has a pop up blocker that works on this site as it stops the pop up, it also has other things like a spell checker that works on any web page you type on, a google search bar and a few other helpful bits and bobs.

I only ever get it when I have logged out and even then I have set the forum page as my favourite thus avoiding the GM home page which is contaminated.
