While it seems the majority of the forum were enjoying the delights of the golf in Scotland, my self imposed sabbatical came to an end yesterday with a lesson from the pro at the club HID is working at.

It seems the problems may not be as dramatic as my inablity to play the game recently led me to believe. Having had the swing videoed it seems that I've a problem with coming way too far inside the line on the way down and getting everything out of synch. The legs and hips are driving through and the arms are playing catch up. Great when the timing is on but otherwise I'm through it too early and hitting the big weak slices or get there too late and the hands get active and its low and left.

The guy got me to adjust the address posture slightly (too slouched) and we worked on hitting shots with a 3/4 swing and feet together to quieten everything down (do it too fast or out of synch and you lose balance and look a numpty in front of everyone). That was fine but he wants me to feel as though I'm dropping the right shoulder and almost coming OTT. Of course from the position too far inside I'll not hit the usual slice this action would normally promote and its to feel as though my arms are more in front of the body. Its okay but I'm hitting a load of shanks and really struggling.

Has anyone else had this problem or is there another drill I can do to get the feeling of coming down on a better line and with the arms in front rather than stuck behind the body. I went to the range today (sabbatical well and truely over) and it was good in patches but I'm struggling to stop shanking and get it bedded in.

Sabbatical, I have had hangovers that lasted longer ... what was it a week?
a week lol that is truly rubbish. I gave the game up for 6 years.
Perhaps it's secretaries cramp you have got?
If you have the shanks, it is inability to play the game, it is a mentally and physically exhausting condition that is fixed away from the course.
Have a break homer, have a kitkat.

Welcome back HJS, I had similar issues, the pro put a ball a few inches above the intended ball for striking but around 18 inches back, and one around 18 inches in front, and told me to get the feeling I was swinging over them both. it helped to widen my swing plane. not sure if I have explaned it well, will try and draw it,

ball-------------------------------------------------ball
---------------------ball to strike

It is just about imagining your swinging over them to wided the arc.
Hope it helps a little. JT

Wait a minute! You have a lesson from a pro yesterday who, I presume, will have given you some tips and some exercises - yes???

One of the guys on here gives you another exercise and you're going to try that???

All I'm seeing here is confusion. You're going to a pro - that's good. He's giving you advice and exercises - that's good. Receiving additional advise on here will just confuse you further - no???

I'm not saying the advice on here is wrong, just that too many exercises/thought processes and you won't know whether you're coming or going.

Totally agree with what Auburn says Homer listen to the pro or you've wasted your cash my man

I've been waiting a long time to say this to you Homer, " Your head is full of sweety mice" Why don't you just grip it and rip it?

Way too many lessons Homer. It's a wonder you have a hat that fits you considering all the info you have received from the pros.

Just get out, practise and play mate. Try to empty your head of the multitude of thoughts flying about in there.
My pro (saw him last year and thinking of seeing him soon for a couple of "iron out faults" sessions) told me he only teaches around 3 things at each session so as not to overload your head with swing thoughts.

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid. Certainly is the way to go.

Have to say Homer - Sunday to Saturday ain't a Sabbatical mate! Its what a lot of us put up with most weeks. If you want a sabbatical take 3-4 weeks off. Seriously!
Also I'll echo the above. Too much info from too many places. A head-full of thoughts is a killer on the golf course.
Keep the faith though Buddy - its out there somewhere....

There are times Homer when you do my head in. :p

You share all your golfing lows and problems with us and, being the friendly bunch that we are, we do our best to give helpful advice based on outsiders' perspective - which you then promptly ignore. You go again to a Pro (different one to your usual gurus), get advice and I would think drills to help, and, because they don't immediately help, you come on the Forum to bemoan your problems and ask again for advice from non-pros most of whom have only seen your swing via t'internet if they even bothered to look in the first place.

It's no wonder you have got problems :)

HJS I have to say I agree with all the comments from the other forumers and only concentrate on what your pro has told you. Everyone on here has good faith and will offer advice that has helped them in the past but the only true advice is from the pro who has seen it and analysed it.

If your pro is as good as most out there then he will be more than willing to answer the phone to you and have a 5 minute chat about what you two covered. Afterall the phone call isn't paying for a lesson so give him a ring and he should reitierate what he wants you to do and give you advice if you've encountered any problems.

Homer why all this moving from pro to pro? If I were you I'd do my research find a very good teaching pro in your area and STICK TO HIM. everyone teaches differently but by going to this pro and that pro you will end up confused as they will contradict each other leading to confusion for you. If you are prepared to fork out for lessons get the best you can afford and give him time to work with you.

Sound advice from others homer take note :)

I would say give the lessons a miss for a month and clear your head,go out relax and enjoy your golf sure your game would improve.

Ditto. You had a week off, and I have started playing the worst golf of my life, culminating in a bogey score of minus 11 on Sunday (not one plus on the card), and back to 10.

Hi Homer
I have been following your trials and tribulations over the last few weeks and simpathise with your problems which I too have had on and off over the last eight years. The cure?
1) Slow the swing down even if you only hit it 80yds shorter
than you would like to do
2)Speak a phrase out loud from the top of the back swing. This removes all swing thaughts on the way down ( not best done in competition!)
3)If you can't do 2 only have ONE swing thaught
4)Try using a 5 wood off the tee to regain the rhythm

At the end of the day it is all about confidence and slowly getting it back

YOU WILL SUCCEED

H/C 13.7 and still going up!
4)
