Anyone else played golf, put their putter in the headcover then next time round found the rust has set in?! Played a week ago in the dry and the greens had something on (fertiliser?). Pulled my putter (Cleveland Smart Square) out and it had rust spots all over! Putter was picked up cheap but surprised me how quick it happened. Must now clean putter properly before putting in headcover! A quick clean and rub down should remove it all.

I think Scotty do an oil cloth for this very reason.

I now take my clubs out of the head covers when they are indoors, when I had iron covers on the mc's, through the clear window you could see how much condensation and moisture builds up in the covers

Yup, affects nearly all my clubs & one reason they get cleaned after every use

For large parts of the year the humidity is stupid high which just accelerates the rust issue and it can form in a couple of days

Rusty Putter? .... sounds like a northern club Country and Western singer. Not sure that she'd need much oiling - though she might appreciate a bit...;)

My 2 month old Scotty has a small rust mark on it after stupidly leaving it in a wet headcover.
I have some high grade gear oil I'll stick on it after cleaning it up a bit with a toothbrush.

I had a TP Mills that this happened to (badly as it was the headcover that was damp) - not realising its 'raw finish' was prone to rust if damp.

Soaked it in Cola for an hour and... hey presto, rust gone!

Always careful with it in damp after that!

Did the cola take off any of the paint/writing?

No!

Lime will probably have a similar effect, as it's slightly acidic - Citric Acid. Cola normally/generally contains Phosphoric acid. It's a chemical reaction. Paints are specifically designed to not react to such reagents!
