Not bothered about people's views on should you listen to music when running.

Are i pods still the things to buy for listening to music ? My better half wants one but I don't know what to get ? Any advice please ?

Cheers

Midnight...

I either use my ipod nano, smallest one more than enough memory for running, otherwise use my iphone and have running playlist on that.

Might want to start with whether they are already locked into the itunes ecosystem/prison.
If so and happy then probably best to stick with fruit based option.
If not perhaps look at SanDisk Clip range (sorry no first hand experience)

I have one of those SanDisk players, superb little device. Can be picked up for peanuts, sound great and don't fall off (I did the GRN in full fancy dress with one and never had a problem).

I bought the lady a Nano a few years back as it took her longer to get the shuffle sorted than a long run takes. And a pouch to keep it dry and save.

I used to run with my phone in the back pack, or no headphones at all.

Midnight, does the good lady wife want to track her runs with GPS? if so just use iphone (insert other brand here) and then the apps like MapmyRun will play music and track the run. If she is not wanting to take a phone with her, i would look at the smallest possible (that can support bluetooth headphones, so a Nano if you want apple)

Hundreds of cheap mp3 players on the market though, and as i said, does she want wired or wireless headphones?

My only comment with Apple stuff is that be aware that there is a lot of bloat ware on any of their devices, and you will not get any where near the stated memory. My ipod touch is a 32GB model, that with no music, photos, video, etc on it comes in at only 26GB free. Buy the right size!

As of iOS 10 you can delete a lot of it.

I would still recommend none Apple if you are not already tied in.

Mate,
She would prefer not to take her phone, not arsed about brand names as long as it works, also not fussed about wired or not.

If her music is already in itunes, you really do need to stay with Apple. If its not, then others work fine, and cheaper, but i find Apple works more cleanly with compilation albums. I hate Apple as much as the next man, but once you have made your pact with the devil, you are kind of stuck with it.

No mate, download Soulseek, get whatever mp3 music you want, copy to SanDisk Clip/generic mp3 player, sorted.

How easy is it to do the copying bear in mind I don't do tech 

Incredibly easy.

There's tutorials on Youtube as well which will be even easier to follow I imagine.
For copying over to the device it's a matter of copy/paste or drag and drop like you would any normal file, the mp3 device should show up as an external hard drive, not like Apple devices which are kind of locked and encrypted. You just need to make sure you're copying to the correct folder on the device which will be called media or music etc.

I havent tried Soulseek, but if i try to convert cds ripped by itunes into anything else, using itunes, or music player, there are always some files that dont translate.
