hi every one i was playing today with my mates and we all hit lovely drives and my mate was about 10 yards away from 150 yard marker he hit hes iron and hit the yard marker full on and hes ball went in the woods,my other mate looks up and says free drop for hitting the marker then he played that shot again from fairway without penalty , my question is shud he have a free drop and play it from fairway or play from woods, thanks in advance

would only be a free drop if there is a local rule and id be very surprised if there was, though he shouldve been able to move the post before playing (as a moveable object)

I was about to say this.
As long as he had decided before the shot was played he could have done something about it, too late after the shots been played.
its a bit like those we have all seen ricocheting of the ladies tee markers to all part of the course that we might have been embarassed about after a not so good tee shot ;)

Dean, go and see your club manger or pro and ask for a rule book which should be free.
Keep it in your bag and the next time someone quotes a ruling at you you're not sure about, hand him the book and ask him politely to show you the ruling.

I hit a power line with my tee shot today on a hole at my home track today.

I know this is a 'play as it lies' or 're tee without penalty' because it's a local rule. So, I'd guess in your circumstance that you'd be in the woods unless a local rule said otherwise.

My ball was fine and the second one got OVER the power lines nicely - heaven knows what I was doing!!

I'm not sure that local rule is correct...the suggested rule is that the shot should be cancelled and replayed if it hits an overhead wire.....

Never played on a course with power lines where it is anything other than a compulsory free retake.

There has always been a penalty and subsequent DQ if you DO proceed with the ball that hit the power line.

+2, we have power lines and you must replay the shot. Playing partner hit a line twice with consecutive shots. Perfectly hit mid irons, third time he topped it.

The following text is suggested:
“If a ball strikes the power line during play of the ____ hole, the stroke is cancelled and the player must play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was played

It is always due to a local rule being in place, it is not a compulsory thing so check first

I did this once playing a lob shot onto a green on the The Park King's Course (11th hole I think), the ball ran along the top of the cable for about 4 feet and landed two feet from the flag. It was a society day and nobody else had noticed so I didn't bother replaying it, especially as the group behind were waiting for us.

Obviously I missed the putt...

But yes, to go along with everyone else, every single course I've seen has it as a compulsory free replay.
