So as not to hijack any other thread i have started this. I am a little puzzled as in the rules I have to select my scoring ball and if I read it right, if that ball is found to not follow the rules the score for the other ball counts. If that is correct why is there a need to select a ball as surely one is right and one wrong OR could a situation arise where both could be ok. Cheers

Exactly that. You could put 2 balls into play as you were unsure how to proceed following, for instance, an unplayable lie. Ball 1 could be played from within 2 club lengths from the nearest point of relief and ball 2 could be played back in a line from the original to the flag. Now both these methods are fine so you have to nominate which you want to count before playing either. Had ball 2 incorrectly been dropped in a line between the original and the teeing ground then ball 1 would count, even if you nominated ball 2 as your preference.

if you don't nominate and both balls are within the rules then its the first one you put into play that counts.

Reason is to eliminate the possibility of '2 bites at the cherry' and being able to select the best one, as opposed to the nominated one!

I think you should check/ ask the officials for a ruling , which ball should be counted before signing your card.

You have to report what you've done to the committee but it's not up to them to decide on which ball counts (provided both are legal). The ball that counts is as per rule 3.3.

sorry that's wrong. The player can choose ball 2 and that becomes the scoring ball provided it's legal (even if ball 1 is legal as well)
