Rubbernecking

I loathe the mis-use of the word rubbernecking!
If I see an accident I slow down- you have no idea whats happening, people could be running onto your carriageway to escape a pile up, a mentally unstable person could be doing similar, a stray animal (it happens- check youtube). I have seen cars come onto your side due to the accident so if you have reduced your speed from avg 70mph you can react better should something occur.
You might also be able to help!
Its up to people behind you not to run into the back of slowing cars!
Gawd help anyone needing assistance with you lot passing by at high speed and trying not to look!

I agree, but it's silly really isn't it, as driving on a motorway is so easy. Why is it some people just can't figure out how to drive on motorway.

Agree - just because I have to slow down and I may glance across does not make me a 'rubbernecker' with all the negative connotations that has. I have not slowed down to have a look.

No it doesn't. As I have had to slow down I may look to see what has caused the hold up - natural inquisitiveness that. If as I slowly approach what I can see has been a serious accident I will generally not look as I drive past - out of respect to those involved and I don't need to know more than I already do. as CMAC says - use of 'rubbernecker' to describe anyone who has to drive slowly past an accident is simply wrong. A 'rubbernecker' is someone who will 'go out of their way' to have a look - hence the rubber in rubbernecker i.e. as if they were having to stretching their neck beyond normal to have a look.

I really don't get why some as so intent to distance themselves from any degree of this activity. We all do it! (except SILH)
As for your bit i've bolded, I was delayed on the commute this morning due to a minor shunt that made 4 lanes come to a standstill and when passing the accident the guy in front of me was rubbernecking and it added to the delay so I thought I'd have a moan about it online

When I am in a slow moving 'stop go' queue of traffic I will look ahead to see where the problem is - and maybe see what it is as that would impact how long it would take me to get clear of it. So yes - I will look to determine what the cause of the hold-up is. And if it is a blazing wreck then as I get closer and then pass slowly by I absolutely will look away - or straight ahead. Driving slowly past an accident does not make me a 'rubbernecker' - and slow traffic past an accident is generally reported as being due to 'rubberneckers' - and that is incorrect.

SOmething like that - though to be honest I don;t really care whether others look - that's up to them.
