After a few abandoned attempts last week, we met up for a friendly matchplay round. The weather was cold, maybe sub-zero (as for JF and Madandra), though thankfully dry.
I gifted the 1st hole to Dave, after a truly magnificent display of inept golfing, then things settled down until the S.I. 1 hole, where it was time for Dave to make his 1 of 3 shots count. Being a long hole, we were both safely on for 3, took our kit to the next tee and went to putt out. BUT, on walking back down to the green, it was apparent that Dave’s ball had mysteriously disappeared??? Not on the bank, not in the river, just plain vanished! Rather embarrassed at winning the hole (when he was sure to steal it with an extra shot) we carried on.
Holes were won and lost to pars (sadly no cheeky birdies) for the next few holes, until a run of conservative pars for me on 3 par 5s (out of 7 holes), just about left Dave running out of time.
The match was won 2 and 1, but Dave actually won the last (having a stroke), so it all came down to 1 or two shots. Sadly, the scene would have been different without the odd disappearing Pro V1.
If we’d played the course in the normal order, I suspect it would have been close to the last.
It was a good game; neither of us was up for a gritty matchplay effort, but we chatted, enjoyed the magnificent scenery and shared a few thoughts on golf and how we could play some of the challenging holes better (our theory was good, but not the reality!). Considering the length of the course with little run, we both played OK. Dave has a good ready-to-draw-when-on-song swing, I was my usual tortoise speed, but kept the ball in play with some straight hitting other than the wretched internal OOB catching me out once.
All in all, a good game, great course, even greater scenery and a sure-fire return match next spring could prove fun. I have to thank him for organising everything so well (being up to my neck in all-sorts) and for welcoming me to a course I have been keen to play for many years.
Shot of the day went to Dave for his rapier tee shot on the 14th (par 3), would have hit the pin with a summer bounce! And he also wins the most-unlucky-thing-to-happen-in-a-good-while prize for the disappearing ball!
