Rory taking a break from golf to fight court case

It will be run by lawyers.

Remember it is not in the interest of the legal beagles to cut the time short - the longer the can keep they're noses in the trough the better they'll like it !!!

If he wants to take time off to fight a court case then fine, if he wants to take time off because he's tired then that's fine too but I don't really care as he's not exactly short of a bob or two so should shut up and get on with playing golf instead of faffing around getting exposure for something very few people care about.

The golfer claims a representation agreement signed by him almost three years ago is invalid and unenforceable on a number of grounds.

He said he signed it when he was just 22. He said he was inexperienced and did not have independent legal advice.

Blimey. I hope he's got more in the legal locker than this.
If that's his case then I can imagine quite a few old pop stars digging out their old contracts. :mmm:

McIlroy isnt really saying anything and everything with the top sports stars gets exposure - thats not McIlroys fault.

Must have been a quiet Sports News day yesterday. So he misses loads of big tournaments being played in .................November. WOW! He's lapping everybody in the Race to Dubai, so missing two tournaments in China is hardly a huge deal in the overall picture.

I have spent the last thirty years on international commercial litigation and can confirm that it is always possible to get a lawyer, especially an American lawyer, to take any case to court regardless of the merits. Remember always that half the lawyers that go to court lose the case.

But they almost all get paid.

You are perfectly free to continue not caring about it, but it would seem you do.

If they were signed on a parallel agreement with the agent but one had their pants pulled down and one didn't the. I think he's within his right to go what he's been overcharged, no different to the PPI chasers.

For 7mil I'd chase it, despite what I had in the bank already, put it another way he could give that money to ma and pa .... It's money he has already lost as it were, and if he wins the case they will have to stump up the legal fees as well.

The only issue I have with this is that his golf might suffer. He strikes me as a player for whom regular tournament golf with intermittent practice is key, so don't expect much when he returns.

Regarding the case, it doesn't matter how much money he has, it's the principle of the thing... if a less known and less successful golfer was taken advantage of or wronged we'd also expect them to take the case. In actual fact, if successful, this case could prove to be beneficial to ensuring big agencies don't take advantage of other sports men & women (at all levels).

My understanding (and it could be completely wrong!) is that he was invited to and attended Horizons xmas party (with no legal representation, because you know, 22 year olds generally don't attend xmas parties with their lawyers), the contract happened to be there and ready for signing, he was told there were no issues to be worried about, he had parity with Gmac, they were looking after him etc.

Regardless, I think the onus should really be on Horizon to settle as a damage limitation exercise; McIlroys star is still rising and regardless of the actual outcome of the case that won't change; Horizon however have seen McIlroy leave, Gmac leaving (left?), and bad publicity over how they deal with young players, giving other agencies a distinct advantage when competing and negotiating deals with other sports stars "...don't consider Horizon, they'll take advantage of you". Cut a deal, get a nice quote from Rory and everybody move on. But then the lawyers wouldn't make as much money....

Much as I love Rory in a manly kind of way, if this is what he did then he is the dumbest sportsperson on the planet. Golfs next superstar and he signs a contract at an Xmas party half cut on egg nog with no lawyers present cause they told him there were no issues to worry about?

Jeez, if that is true I hope he doesn't answer the phone to the Indians who call me from 'Microsoft Internet PLC' who tell me there's a virus on my PC and if I just opens up a connection to them so they can access my PC through the internet they will sort it out for me for £80. ;)

£80? I was charged £120 and now my PC won't work. But I don't mind as I'm just waiting on a Nigerian prince sending me through some money to my bank account.

Excellent. Fancy a snowball, kissing under the mistletoe and signing this contract I have pre-prepared for you? Don't worry, it's all kosha and you have parity with all the greats, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Old Tom Morris.
