Roughly a year ago I went for a routine dental check up. The dentist picked up that one of my silver fillings had cracked and he recommended that it be replaced. He said that if it split, it could take part of the tooth away with it. I reluctantly agreed to the new filling...

After the procedure, the tooth was sensitive. Over time this sensitivity decreased...

Fast forward to April of this year and we're preparing to go on holiday to Cornwall...

We're leaving on the Saturday, what happens on the Friday night? Yep, that's right - the tooth starts to play up!

We travel down to Cornwall and all's well...

On the Monday we went on a 'sea safari' which was excellent! I got off the boat and my tooth was throbbing! I phoned NHS direct and got an appointment on the Wednesday...

Come Wednesday and the dentist informs me that the new filling had touched the nerve and that the nerve was in the stages of dying and that I'd need a root canal - nice!

She patched me up with a temporary filling and sent me on my way...with the instruction to see my dentist upon my return home.

I ignored this instruction...for one day...

Tuesday morning and I'm in the shower. I go to wash my face and feel a massive lump on my jaw line. Finding something like that certainly wakes you up!

Dental appointment booked.

Dental diagnoses = abscess!

Temporary filling removed - medicine/antibiotics applied - another temporary filling applied.

Oh, and x-ray taken - root canal needed!

This afternoon - part one of the root canal done - left canal 'rooted', right hand to be done in the next few weeks and then crown fitted sometime after that.

I'm fairly done with Dentists, to be honest.

Sorry for the diatribe but feeling fairly sorry for myself. :mmm:

Hopefully it settles down now. There is a small risk that root canal is not 100% effective, and you may lose the tooth!

Fingers crossed.

The last time I went for a root canal the dentist had to put a bite guard in my mouth as I fell asleep and kept closing my mouth.

He has now learnt that after giving me the pain killing injections the next thing to do is put in the guard as he knows that whatever the treatment I'll be snoring right the way through it.

My dentist hates me, as he gets no money from me what so ever. Went for a check up the first time in 3 years, no issues with my teeth, the dentist looks in my mouth full of expectancy that he may get to do a filling, nada, zippo, nothing, so he asks do I want a polish and descale, no thank you, my are fine as they are. I don't smoke nor drink much so they are not stained and I've no need for the whitened Hollywood look.

So I get out of the seat and he says see you in a year or so.

When I had it many years ago the dentist said "I think the tooth is dead, shall we try it without anaesthetic?" I have never felt pain like it, before or since. Only lasted about 10 seconds before I called a halt and got anaesthetised. Never want to repeat the experience.

My GF is a dentist so I don't get a way with anything. I also sat through three root treatments one after the other on three teeth in a row because I have a cyst in my lower jaw. Funny thing is that the articaine didn't work. I felt the whole thing. After four jags it still wasn't numb. I just said to get on with it. Rather relaxing when they get the root out and you don't feel it anymore.

I hurt my hand on a lob wedge shot the other day and it's been more painful lol

My HID, my Bro-in-Law and one of my best mates are dentists, so i hear the other side of the story. AW, my BIL is down your way in Kent. Luckily havent been to a dentist in a long while. The only time i got there was just after we got married, she did a clean & polish (only time that has happend). When i had to remove my wisdom, it was a choice between HID and Mate - no surprise that I went to my mate. It was about 5 years ago and I have yet to be forgiven for it!!!

Two weeks after a 6 monthly check up last summer part of one of my lower molars broke off. I did not have any pain so left it until the next check up which was in Feb. By that time more of the tooth had broken off but still no pain.

The dentist said the nerve was obviously dead and I could have it pulled out or crowned. I decided to get it pulled but he xrayed it before doing anything.

On the xray he found the tooth next to it had a shadow on the root. This was a crowned tooth and he said the root filling had failed. The options for that were get it root filled again or take it out.

I originally went for taking it out but after the problems he had getting the first one out and realising that I would only be able to chew on one side of my mouth I went for root filling again.

Had the appointment 3 weeks ago but after an hours treatment he said that was enough for one day and he was about half way through. He put a temporary filling over the top of the hole he had drilled in the crown and I am due back there next week.

In the meantime the temporary filling has come out and all the antiseptic leaked out so next week will probably not be the end it.

Look up Apicoectomy/Apicectomy in Google, I`ve had to have this procedure done twice over the years on my front teeth/gums. Not nice.
