Room for error?

Invited another forum member to play at my home course and offered him 4 extra shots on to his 12 handicap, as I knew my course would beat him up and I bet he wishes he took them now and more.

So I sat down and thought to myself, what is so different about my track than other courses.

Long, yeah not bad
Woods, yeah plenty
Rough, yeah loads

Then it occurred to me

Out of bounds comes into play on 9 holes

Water on 10 holes

Water and out of bounds 6 holes

Now I dont know, is that a lot different than other courses?

No water, and the only out of bounds is behind the 18th and doesn't really come into play. It is there to protect a very rare weed, which only grows at the bottom of this bank, and no where else in the whole world (according to Watford council).

That said, we do have trees. Lots of them. And pretty severe rough.

I reckon 4 shots is about right.
Mostly if i play a course for the first time,i reckon i could save 4 shots
just on knowing the course better 2nd time around.

that's a lot of OOB!!!!

there's a few courses i've played this year that have had lots of water and they were difficult as the water came into play from the tee.

it depends how close in the out of bounds is but i'd say the majority of courses have room for error,to an extent.

I used to play at a short (par 68 ss67) course of 5800 yds that people said they would take apart, the 'OPEN' they had each year was usually won with a nett 65 and scratch 70ish, they have 11 holes with OB

What do you play off. I know Mill Ride very well and to be fair a lot of the water shouldn't come into play. Is there really that many OOB's? Don't recall that many

Plenty of water on are course 3 lakes and 1ressy. More trees than Sherwood. 1 deep ravine that runs across a few fairways. Some OOB not to much more for safety than anything else. A fun course to play if the wind is in the wrong direction.

This has to be one of the great finishing holes in golf. The green sits imperiously above the lake on a “hog’s back” with the prevailing wind of the water. The player often has to play further right, across the water and the two guarding bunkers, than he would wish, but if he takes the safe route to the left and overdoes it, he is invariably down a steep slope in a forest of trees and decaying leaves, often never to be seen again. Stand on this tee with a good card in your pocket and strike the ball solidly to the centre of the green and your sense of achievement is complete; fiddle nervously and try to protect your score and you will almost certainly live to regret it. Most courses have a card wrecker somewhere along the way, but when it is the eighteenth and as picturesque as this one, there’s something special about it.

Lets face it, it doesnt matter how good a player you are, if you play a course week in week out, youre going to visit every lake and every out of bounds at some stage

Hi Dave, Yes played it, found water, walked off with a 6. When we played it a few months ago, I'll be honest the greens where shocking (hadn't the local main water pipe burst for a few weeks??). It was in an open and the greens were hollow tined, and as dry as any I have ever played.

Has the course recovered, as the layout was fantastic and the views quite good also. The course had beaten me up even before I got to the greens, though. I would go back again but only if the greens had been sorted. It was only £14 in the open, but was very disappointed the pro not advising the state of the course, when asked the day before. 36 stableford points won that day which was 4BBB, which is unheard of, so everyone else struggled as well, and he was an ex-mamber of 20 years, who said he moved due to other previous problems with the greens.

We've got water in play on the outward 7 holes, its called the Moray Firth.

That's some hazard
