A strange thread title, but it will explain itself.
I was watching "Road to Glory" the other night, its about the Sky cycling team.
And they had a piece about the mental side. They call him the monkey.
Basically hes the voice in our heads that send doubt to the brain,i call mine the devil, the little
man that says you cant do it.
It can hit everyone different, and effect us all different.
It can effect us at work, during excersise and life in general.
Road to glory is about cycling, the monkey for them is the voice that gives them doubt about wether they
can do it,the voice that tells them to stop because its too tough.
I too get it when im out cycling,i have a big 3 mile hill near me and everytime i go up it my devil
is telling me to stop, because its too hard, painfull and it woulld be easier to turn around and go home.
To overcome this i try to relax and tell myself im doing it for my kids and they would be disapointed if i turned around.
I know this sounds strange but the devil[who is "Mr Negative" is a powerfull force.
On the programme the riders have their own mentors, phychologist etc.
We have no one and we have to overcome these negatives ourselves.
On the golfing side of it,its a little bit the same.
The "Monkey" "Devil or whatever yours is called is telling you to give up,youve got off to a bad start to your round.
He starts telling you, your rounds over, theres always next week even though you still have shots left of your handicap.
The whole reason for the post is to ask you how mentally strong you are.
I aways thought i was so strong mentally and i could get over anything,i would have rated myself a 9 0r 10.
However after a bit of thought i think im about a 7.
How would you rate yourself, what do you call you "mr negative" and how do you deal with him?.

My coach mentioned this yesterday as he's reading The Chimp Paradox so Amazon are sending me a copy!

I'm a 9 in everything but golf and probably a 2 and weak is p**s in medal rounds. Matchplay I'd go up to a 6 I reckon but it is one of the weakest elements of my game despite loads of reading material to try and improve.

In golfing terms I'm OK provided I have at least half a swing with me, maybe an 8 or 9.

For life in general I'm a solid 2 as I'd rather switch the tele on than pick up a paint brush/vacuum/mower/etc.

Hmmmm..... might go see what's on the tele......

I've just read this and chatted with the other half about it and she said that I am definitely 10 ......... sorry, misheard her ..... apparently I'm round the bend!

Must get my ears syringed!

Playing individual sports when the wheels come off [metaphorically speaking] that usually spells that my day is done... Never been really good at getting my direction back...

Playing team sports however didn't seem how dark the situation got I'd refuse to give up the fight...

Nice post and topic. I am trying to improve on how I deal with negativity in not just sport, but in everyday life.
I am a very positive person to begin with though, so its trying to identify negativity immediately and shake it off.

This will probably sound crazy to most, but as soon as I feel the negativity or 'hear the voice' so to speak, its like there is a devil on my shoulder and all I do is shrug my shoulders so that 'the devil falls off' and move on. Its my 'trigger' to move past these thoughts

That's me to a tee (excuse the pun) and could never let my team mates down by quitting...

I was a 3 or 4 but having more faith in my game in 2012 I'd say I'm 6 in comps and 7 in matches this year. I would drop my head but this year I try and grind a score to get the buffer, and if I can't get that then I'll just try and shoot my best score on the day.

For life in general I'm a solid 2.......

Blimey - you rate yourself that highly? I had you down as a 1 tops..................!!!!

In golfing terms I would say I was a 4 or 5. In life in general I was about the same until about 2 years ago when one of my best friends passed away unexpectedly at 41. That made me put a whole new outlook on life and I would say that - with my two young boys now getting older and wanting to do lots of different things, I am about an 8. However I do still have occasional 'JustOne' days!!!
