Starmer simply can't let himself be open to any accusation whatsoever of doubt over his determined antisemitism purge within the Labour party. No matter what mitigations were pleaded for RLB, if he had not acted as he did the Tories and right wing press would have been all over him on this like a rash. Anything to divert attention from the government's management of the pandemic response, and something that Johnson would immediately start using in PMQs to attack Starmer rather than answer difficult questions from him.

It also helps when calm decisiveness and adherence to a principle are things Starmer can display as a contrast to what goes on the other side of the dispatch box.

IMO she only became a front benched because of her unconditional support for Corbyn.

Then when Starmer defeated her in the leadership contest he retained her as to do otherwise would have been seen as divisive.

Now she has provided him with the opportunity to get rid of her whilst presenting himself as a strong leader.

Are you forgetting the last time this happened in Labour? Militant Tendency? Kinnock brought about the change, it led to 3 terms for Blair. A split in Labour will make them more electable, not put any nails in coffins.

Mustn't forget that Labour cannot - in all likely England and Wales scenarios - get back into power for as long a the Scottish Labour Party flounders around as it is, and the main opposition to the SNP is Jackson Carlaw's SCUP.

Were Labour to get back to 40 seats in Scotland the Tories 80 majority would vanish - all else remaining the same. But the prospect of that happening any time soon is rather distant. Might have helped the SLP cause had Labour elected Ian Murray as Starmer's deputy - but they didn't.

The whole Labour anti semitism 'issue' was always completely bogus. There was no evidence of anything but a tiny number of highly debatable 'anti semitic incidents'. Especially if you rule out any criticism of the Israeli government as anti semitic. Because it isn't. It was just another part of the campaign of lies perpetrated against a Labour party that some people, including their own party members, did not want elected.

There is no doubt that the Israeli security forces uses the neck kneeling technique. There is no doubt that Israeli security forces have trained US police. The only thing in doubt is whether the Israelis taught this technique to US police. So no anti semitism, no conspiracy theory and no reason to sack her. Starmer has made himself look foolish.
