RIP printed edition of the NME

I see this Friday's will be the last ever print edition of the NME, with them moving it all to on line, clickbait and all.

I know time moves on and the kids today have so much more easy access to new music as I ever did in my day. But it launched a hell of a lot of great writers and broadcasters. It also opened up my ears up to so much excellent (and at times rubbish, can't win them all) music I would not have heard if it wasn't for the NME and Melody Maker, which has long since gone as well.

So thanks NME for making my life better.

I was mainly Melody Maker myself - but did for a year or so move to Sounds (still have a free Sounds sampler album for so many tokens collected). yup - they did make my life better and interested in music,

NME was an essential read in the late 70s/early 80s. The free print edition was pathetic, am glad to see it goes as it was a disgrace to the name. The website is even worse, but easier to ignore.

Don't recall tbh - my peak reading period was been mid-late 1970s. Don't think I read the music press regularly much into the 80s. Her's my free Sounds album (1977)

Sometimes I like to sit down and read a good magazine which I can easily flick through.
The thought of doing so on my phone just leaves me cold.
I'm old school, thank goodness!

I don't really recall it being too jazzy...certainly the free album isn't. I think I started to read MM before I started on Sounds. I mean heck-a-mighty - that album is more than 40yrs old - my memory is vague about these student days

I have never once bought Golf Monthly (should I admit that here? haha). I found this forum by Googling for a golf forum, and I read their articles if they catch my eye in the links on the right hand side.

I haven't bought/read an actual magazine since.. I can't even remember. I used to get Kerrang magazine when I was about 17-18 so that would be 13/14 years ago.

With magazines I am old school in that I like to have a hard copy. I've even tried those ones where they are half the size so they take up less space that they sell at airports, but to be honest I find the text too small. I have seen some good deals where you can pay a certain amount each month and get access to loads of mags on your tablet. But I just cant get into reading mags on a phone or tablet. I tend to grab a read of mags when I can and will just read one article at a time at most, I very rarely sit down for more than 5 minutes to read one. So I can't be doing with firing up my tablet, loading up the mag etc etc and would much rather just pick it up.

But when it comes to books I am kindle all the way and would not think of buying a paper novel now.

Really poor claim to fame, my first ever band had our name printed in an edition of NME once as we won a support spot for Mansun, still got it somewhere.

Sad to see it go in printed for. NME and Sounds were my musical fixes and were great reads. A valuable source of information for gigs from up and coming bands as well as the more established ones. It begs the question, will the printed word in magazine format continue or will the majority follow suit and opt for digital only?

RIP, indeed. Loved it for a good 10 yrs or so but I’ve not read it for ages. Saw lots of great acts on their recommendation - Bentley Rhythm Ace will never be forgotten in our house.

Another one one who got their band mentioned in the gig section, still proud years later 😁
