Rip-offs? - let's hear about 'em.

Several years ago, I took what I think is my not-very-expensive watch (£175) to the point of purchase to have a new battery replaced. I was expecting to wait 5 mins...

"This will need to be sent away to be done sir."

"Why?"

"Special back and tool that we don't have. Only the manufacturers have it"

"Right...definitely can't be done here or elsewhere?"

"No sir"

"How long will that take?"

Looks in a manual...then a diary..."Should be back in March."

"MARCH?!!? It's November! Takes 4 months to change a battery!?!".

"We've got to send it to Germany".

"I'll walk it quicker there than the time you're saying! How much is that going to cost?"

"£200"

Pause. "What? That's more than the new price of the watch. I've only had it 18 months."

"Yes, sir, sorry".

"In summary then. If I want a battery changed on this watch, it will take four months and cost me more than a new one".

"Errr, yes."

"I will put this watch in the bin then."
