I'd already asked the question and got a YES so I left it up to her to choose the engagement ring. Gave her free choice really. She's a sensible sort and went for something stylish without being too in your face. It was pricey - over a months wages but the one she wanted. I'm not a fan of getting the ring first. Same here. This is the sensible route to go down. Take cash and batter them down! Thats what I done and managed to get a couple of hundred quid off. Also I saved half the cost of my own ring as I had it made by a friend of a friend. Typical scotsman!

Yup, 'we' found huge perfect ring, 3.75k (2 carats in diamonds of the clearest etc etc). Now we did get treated like royalty and were given tea, coffee etc for the 2 hours or so that were there and a bottle of champagne when we were leaving. Then she mentioned platinum so had to get it reset in platinum, it's now insured for 5k and I make sure she wears it everywhere, just to get the use out of it! Haha.

Given what you would need for a deposit on a house I'd say pay what you can sensibly afford and make it a joint decision.

If you spend £3k or so on a ring it's another £3k you could have as a deposit, unfortunately where diamonds are concerned with women, all common sense goes out the window.

I was in a temp job straight our Uni so I bought a £350 diamond ring from Ernest Jones. A couple of years later I decided to buy her a better ring so I had one made to order from a lovely jewelers in Gloucestershire. It wasn't cheap but looks lovely and you can actually see the diamond!

I was really shocked when she gave me the watch. I had bought the ring without her knowing and proposed on the beach in Mexico. A couple of days later she told me she had a massage booked in the spa and would be there for a couple of hours as a decoy so she could go to luxury avenue in cancun to get me the watch. We went for a meal that night and she gave me it in the restaraunt. I was made up with the watch as i'd wanted one for a while.

I will give you a great piece of advise here. Go and look around pawn shops and antique shops. You will be amazed at what can be picked up in these. Some of the antique rings look fantastic and will be a fraction of the price of a new one. So that will allow you to buy an even better one.....:thup:

Ungrateful bitch. If I was with a woman like that then I would take the ring back and find someone else if she was that materialistic. It is a token of your devotion and love not a fashion item. Take a look at the type of rings she wears already, or take someone like your sister to help you.

If I had to do it again, I would certainly have a look at antique shops as well as main stream jewelers.

Depends on the couple. If me and my mrs ever went down that route, she'd probably be more happy with something that cost less than a go-karting session. Any more she'd feel I was cheating her out of a go-karting session. Money wise, if I leave the Yorkshireman behind, i'm in a position to pay 1500, with 3-4mths saving to recoop that money.

I think it is so much nicer. Go to an antique shop and get a stylish antique ring. It will be like nothing else her mates would have and you will get far more for your money than going to a high street jeweller. After you get it you can always go to a jeweller and get him to clean and polish it for you to make it sparkle like new.
