Rickie Fowler's personality = lack of winning

Just looking a various websites and YouTube, and you often see Rickie larking about being himself in the background.

I find his personality very good for the game as it seems to inspired a young following.

But, does anyone else feel that his "clowning around" attitude could be a hindrance when it comes to his performance?

Bubba Watson goofs around a lot and doesn't take himself seriously at all. In fact he makes a point of having fun every day and he won a major.
I don't see how Fowler's attitude off the course would affect his performance on the course.
They don't all have to behave like robots to be successful.

I like him. Bit different fom the usual Tour Pro. Seems to actually be enjoying what he's doing.

As for attitude and commitment, I don't think you can become one of the 30 best golfers in world without a tremendous attitude and lots of hard work.

It's often what we don't see that get's these guys to where they are.

This is why Golf is in such great shape right now. So Many players good enough to win majors . it is getting more and more difficult to pick a major. 10 years ago , if you best anyone other than Tiger, Phil, Els then the odds were stacked in your favour.

Fowler will win a Major, has the game and attitude to do it. As for the larking about, It's done Bubba no harm....

Yeah & you sound like a right little ray of sunshine

Immsure I read somewhere Rickie fowler says he hardly ever practises in comparison with the other pros he just plays loads. Sure he said he would rather go play 18 holes with his college mates than stand and putt for 2 hours.

Clearly he has practised a lot somewhere down the line though

Monty didn't really practice either.

Fowler doesn't have lessons, doesn't practice, and it seems to work for him. Not every one is the same.

He's only been a pro for a few years and he's already won, beating Rory in a playoff. Besides that, if someone is good enough to play on the PGA tour and in Ryder Cups then I think he is doing fine with the personality he's got.

As he is being himself whilst clowning around, does that mean he is in fact a clown? Blimey, now you mention it, that would explain the orange clothes he wears. I bet it's a bugger to find golf clown shoes, I bet he's tried these though

Eye, and Colin Montgomerie, as funny as a toothache and not really know for larking around. But no majors for him (but you would not know it from the pontificating he does on Sky).

I don't really care is Fowler wins or not - watching golf is ENTERTAINMENT for me and Fowler is certainly more interesting to watch than some other players I can think of.

I agree with the O/P in a sense

I put a bet on Billy Horschel to win the open last weekend, thought he had a good chance going into the final round.

Was excited a big pay off was imminent since i got him at 80/1

As soon i saw him come out in the clown trousers, i thought to myself he's not taking this seriously, and i've got £5 e/w on him!
He's draw attention to himself with his silly trousers? rather than maybe by winning

Ok its a bit of a tenuous link but i think there is something in it psychologically

hmmm ... that would suggest you think Horschel sabotaged himself!
I don't think any golfer would intentionally do that for the amount of money they play for.

yes sabotaged himself unbeknowingly though,, nobody would knowingly sabotage themselves

i'm just suggestion he has decided to wear those trousers to get attention which may have inadvertently effected him
for example on the first tee he's thinking "look at my cool trousers"

im not saying he isn't still concentrating a great deal on his golf, but i think the silly trousers is a needless factor that may have detract him even if it is only just by 1% from his concentration on his game, therefore winning, and me getting my £5 e/w paid off :)

Another missed cut for fowler, all the potential in the world but something is definately off. I think that huge cap must be too tight

Does he still have the little goatee thing or has he shaved it off? It's probably that.

In all seriousness he doesn't clown around on the course from what I've seen, he goes about his business. He looks a bit brash, likes to dress up a bit but hey, he's young, where's the harm? He generally comes across very level headed when interviewed.

The pschological effect of trousers on a golfer's game is not a new subject.

It was explored by P G Wodehouse in "The Magic Plus Fours" many years ago.

Possibly needs further academic study though. Could be worth a chapter in the next Bob Rotella book.
