I've been following the scores in the first two rounds of the French Open and have noticed that four players have ''retired'' (or have been disqualified). I wonder if anyone knows what the rules are in this situation as it came up recently in conversation.
I know it can't be fun for a pro to continue when he's taken 89 in the first round. Probably wants to get the hell out of it. Do they have to provide evidence of injury or can they just pack in and go home?

I remember Michael Campbell saying that on occasion he'd deliberately missed putts in order to make sure he missed the cut. I assume he wouldn't have to do that if he could just walk out if he felt like it. I doubt the tournament sponsors are too happy when players admit to deliberately missing cuts.

I imagine when you've just shot 89, it's pretty easy to persuade everyone that you must have an injured wrist or something.
