Just thought I would ask on here....

I have misplaced my spare car key and need to get a replacement, but main dealer prices seem eye-watering. Anyone know or have any experience of doing this outside of the dealer? Costs etc

I have a 2007 Audi Estate with a flippy key.

Thanks in advance

when my wifes handbag got stolen with my BMW keys, there was no alternative to main dealer "stealer"

The new key will need to be programmed to the ECU (dealer only) (£50), new key cut (£30), new fob (£50).

If you get it all done for under a ton, i will be amazed. If its more than that still, what is the excess on your home insurance and do you have loss cover for out of the house..??

Not 100% on Audi but for some you can buy a "blank" and anyone with whatever the up-to-date version of AudiTek is can program the Blank.
I have Tech2 for Vauxhall/Opel and can do this for cars up to May 2012 (as I don't have the latest update) so the principle is the same AFAIK.

I think I get the gist of that Greig  but who might have AudiTek -specialist independent? Would they also cut keys?

Dunno about round your way but up my way there are "mobile diagnostic" businesses that usually have a specialism to a marque.
Check yell.com and phone a few and ask. Someone usually knows someone if you get me. The dealers try to stamp it out by not making the software available outside of their dealers but you know today's society... It gets out somehow (that's how I got OPCom, Tech2 and TIS 2000 Vauxhall technical manual :D).
The easy part is getting a key cut to match the barrel pattern, the hard part is where the ECU codes come in to it.

Edit to add: Example of key blank http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4D0-837-2...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a158c785c
