Had a situation today where I went into a ditch that has been filled in and is currently GUR. It runs diagonally across a fairway. Not sure on the ruling, do I have to take relief at the nearest point or do I have the option to go back in line with the flag? Nobody in the group knew, as it was just a bounce game I took the back in line with the flag option.

The only option for free relief from GUR is to find the nearest point of complete relief (no nearer the hole than the original spot of the ball) and drop within one club-length of that point. There is no back-on-the-line relief option, by doing so you played from a wrong place and incurred the general penalty.

Just one more tip...
If you have any other questions about the rules and you want more replies, ask your questions in the rules section. That's where the rules experts hang out, they tend not to venture too far from there.
