Regripping graphite shafts

Thought I'd start a new thread rather than bury it in the others :

So I'm fairly comfortable in starting on the irons when all the stuff arrives but when it come to graphite, is there a better way of removing the old tape other than scrapping it off with a blade ?

Surely this will just mark up a graphite shaft ?

A soak in warm water should soften the glue enough to remove the tape, then use white spirit and a sponge to wipe off the residual keich that's stuck on
