Looking to have a game somewhere midweek. Any recommendations for a good course in the Dumfries area?

I've haven't played any around that neck of the woods, so open to suggestions.

Southerness for links, nice course... Tough!

Dumfries & county or powfoot are supposed to be decent although I haven't personally had the pleasure of either.

Southerners is a class above anywhere else in the area. Tough is an understatement if the wind blows.

I've played Thirnhill - ten to fifteen miles north and Dumfries County of the two Thirnhill is much friendlier and a much more enjoyable course

If you mean Thornhill, I remember it as not much better than a field? Powfoot a nice links course, and Dumfies & County a good parkland. A bit of a trot from Dumfries, but Stranraer - James Braid's final course - is worth a visit.

Brighouse is about 34 miles from Dumfries just past Kircudbright, haven't played it personally but it gets good reviews. A few mentions of the place on the forum if you do a search.

Southerness is a proper test of golfing skill. If you want every part of your game tested go there, easily one of the toughest ive played.

Playing Southerness in May on a wee golf trip, slightly worried that the course is going to be hard. It is also my 1st ever time on a links course too so hopefully Golf monthly deliver my free golf balls on time as I guess I am going to need them lol

Another +1 for Southerness, love that place, but it can be brutal in the wind!

Powfoots nice, Dumfries & County too. I enjoyed Thornhill, nice easy knock and the course has been in great condition the few times I've played it.

I'd also second Backwoodsman, Stranraer is a great set up. Almost like 2 different courses with the front and back 9's.

You'll be fine as long as it isn't windy.

(It's always windy though)

Best course in D&G imo, cheap, long and tough, always in good condition and rarely busy.A rare gem that I play loads when I'm at my but n ben at carrick shore.

I quite enjoyed Moffat (about 20 miles north of Dumfries), some interesting holes and spectacular views, and quite cheap from what I remember

Moffat is a bit hilly from what I recall but has been a very long time since I played there (89?). Nearly had a hole in one at the grass walled par 3, hit the flagstick

When we arrived I bought some purple Titleists only to find the course covered in purple heather! I'm sure they sold those balls over and over and over again

Brighouse was good - you have to go through a caravan park to get to it if I recall correctly? Some quite tough holes if it is windy - and it was fiercely windy when I was there. Recall one hole where we had to aim about 45 degrees off the hole to allow for the wind to bring it back.
