With the big 4 0 looming large HID has asked what I want for it. I have decided to go for a set of fitted irons but I don't have a clue which ones to try.

For a little background on my swing. I have a swing speed of 108 mph with a driver and 96 mph with a 6 iron. I am currently using Callaway X tour forged irons which I get a lot of height and back spin with which is losing me far too much distance especially into the wind. I have TT S300 steel shafts in them which I do like.

I want to stick with forged irons if I can as I prefer them to cast irons, I don't know why, I just do.

I learned to play with blades and would have no qualms about going back to them of going for a combi set of irons with a small cavity on the longer irons. I have also been told, by quiet a few people, that I am a good striker of the ball but I do take a fairly big divot.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

At those swing speeds it seems to me that, for your handicap, either you are quite new to the game or something else is going wrong with your shots!

I don't believe it's anything that hardware can overcome, so I'd suggest you acquire a program of lessons rather than fitted clubs! Well done on the cuts this year, but you should still be considerably lower than that. a little more consistency and a sharper short game should see near single figures this year. That's a better time for you to consider new/fitted irons. Nothing wrong with X-Tours/S300s btw, though worth getting a loft/lie check done.

Have you spin numbers from a launch monitor? How much spin are you getting with your 6 iron?

The X forged are a good players club and not designed to knock the ball up in the air. TT DG S300 can be a bit too spinny for some players, though, so I would think that if there is not a swing technique issue underlying this, then the shaft is the issue, and either a heavier/stiffer shaft, perhaps X100 or a lower spin shaft, say C-Tapers, in S+ or X flex might help.

96mph with a 6 iron is a pretty strong hit, and more swing speed than many Tour pros can generate.

You should be able to demo both of these at any decent pro with a Titleist or Callaway fitting cart.

I haven't been playin that long. I played for a year about 12 years go then had to give up for finacial reasons and came back to the game 2 years ago. I played with really old blades both times before getting the Callaways which really impoved my game.
I've been told by my pro that I could easily be down to 12 or 13 this year as my short game is very good and my putting is better than average. My problem is getting to the green not on or around it. This has improved with the new driver and I have a lesson every couple of months which gives me time to work on each change we make.

I create a lot of spin with all my clubs. When I went to a Cally demo day last year I had a go on the launch monitor and with my driver I had around 5000 rpm back spin. I didn't look at the back spin on the 6 iron and didn't get a printout as the guy had a gap so let me have a go for free.
Our greens are drying out well now and on one of our par 3s I hit a 4 iron into the green that hit the green, checked on it's second bounce with 3 feet of roll. The pitch mark was very shallow so I expected it to roll to the back of the green. I have hit our 100 yard par 3 towards the back of the green and spun the ball back 20+ feet!
We are going to start working on getting my ball flight down a bit over this year but I really want some new shineys to do it with!!!

Hi Andy, I'm going to guess you are a monster so I won't say anything bad to you. Ever.

:)

Get yourself properly fitted somewhere reputable (ask on here you'll get a few I'm sure), from what I can gather if you can get a good set of irons and stick with them for a few years you stand a good chance of gaining consistency. Seems the technology in woods develops quickly so warrants a change every now and then but good irons that suit you should last donkeys, so get good uns and don't go with the per-conception of wanting a certain brand etc or you may have made your decision with your heart before you let your head have a go

My nickname at the club is animal.

Ping I20.

Best non-Mizuno irons I've hit :D

These or JPX825 pro... I did a fitting review a while back. Come with the TT or PX as standard, where as the I20's don't. Won't go wrong with either. I loved the AP2's, but couldn't hit them for toffee! But the that was the tool on the end rather than the club! I also think the amp cell pro's look quality!

Thanks for the input. I'm planning on trying as many as I can to make sure I get the right set for me but to have some idea of the models to look for has been great.

Why not go to a fitting centre somewhere and pay for a session and try a few different makes and models. Give them a call, explain what you are looking for and let them get you on the monitor. I would suggest you need to get that spin rate down and they should be able to find a shaft to suit

That's what I'm planning on doing. We have a fitting centre that does most major brands, it's more about which models I could look at rather than brands. I'm not a brand tart by any stretch of the imagination and I'm really looking forward to the experience already.
