Normally, (at my club anyway) if the ball lands in an animal scrape or hole, the player would be entitled to a free drop. My playing partner (it was a friendly and no money exchanged hands) hit his ball into a bunker. The ball ran up the front face of the bunker and came to rest in a rabbit hole at the top of the bunker (where the bunker ended but not out of the bunker) and was unplayable. Now I allowed him a free drop in the bunker but wondered if that was right :D

I would say that you did the right thing but I'm quite happy to be corrected.
As long as he dropped in the bunker not nearer the hole then I can't see a problem.
